hi , ive just bought a pay as you go broadband modem , im using an old compaq computer with windows 98 as the operating system, the problem is that i didnt check before i bought the modem that it requires windows 2000 at least,is there any way that i could upgrade the usb drivers to be able to use the modem without upgrading to windows 2000, which i cannot afford!!!

It might help if you supplied the make/model of the modem. It's probably the modem drivers that you need, and they (or a workaround) may be available. Try reposting in Networking forum (with make/model!)..
It might also help if you supplied the W98 version - FE or SE (first or second edition).

... as "Rambler" say's post the make/model of the modem here
... some of us do'nt look in "Networking forum"
..
... Posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties
