Outlook has caused an error in OUTLLIB.DLL. Outlook will now close. (created a window, but empty)

If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer. (tried many times and tried reinstalling/repairing without luck.

Running Windows ME & Outlook 2000
Error messages:
Outlook has caused an error in OUTLLIB.DLL. Outlook will now close.
AND
Msiexe has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL. msiexe will now close.

I have found reference to this problem on the Internet, but no solutions. Searched the Norton database too and nothing so I guess not a virus. Help appreciated. Joanne

I guess you tried to re-install without success? I am now using Outlook Express 6 as my fallback (free). Just grin and bear it.

Having same problem here (Outlook has caused an error in OUTLLIB.DLL. Outlook will now close.).

Wouldn't you know it, Microsoft's support site is beyond slow and keeps timing out before I can get to the help database. Too late tonight to call 'em in Seattle...but you can bet I'll be on the phone first thing tomorrow.

If its any help I had the same problem,
Tried reloading etc etc..
I had Office XP word, exel access & powerpoint but was using outlook 2000 not outlook XP (2002) this has worked fine for months.

so I upgraded to XP outlook (rather I tried it said remove 2000 first so I did)outlook 2002 now bombed out with an error when i tried to open or create an email. I then removed Office XP. Deleted c:\program Files\Office and c:\windows\application Data\Microsoft\word , \exel and any other folders that looked office like in this folder. I then installed office 2000 and everthing works fine now. Havent tried putting office XP back on as I dont see the point office 2000 is faster on my machine.. Hope this helps ....

In my case , outlook did startup but after 3 seconds it crashed with the same error.
I tried te reinstall outlook but it didn't solve the problem. I than received a very small mail (only a subject) and my outlook didn't crash anymore. When I jumped from the new incoming mail to the previous mail, I had the problem again. To delete this bad mail, I swithed off the auto-example-display, and deleted the mail. (The error was generated while dusplay to auto-example of the mail).
This way may problem is solved. Hope this can help you.

Go to
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office
and locate outllib.dll then rename it to outllib.old or similar.
Now try to repair office, if no good then try reinstall.
Hope this helps.

Hello,

I'm having the same problem (Outlook has caused an error in OUTLLIB.DLL. Outlook will now close.). On my machine there runs Win98SE and the problem arises with Outlook 98. I have uninstalled Outlook 98 and reinstalled, but it did not help!

Recently I received an email without any text. Just "Re: " as a subject. So it might have been a virus.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks a lot,

mike hunt

I too am running win 98 with outlook 98 and received and email with re: as the subject. I could open Outlook but when I tried to open my inbox it would give me an invalid page fault OUTLLIB.DLL. It would close down Outlook and attempt to launch Windows Media Play with an error message that the specified protocol is unknown. Starting in Safe Mode did not solve the problem. I was convinced the problem was coming from those email messages RE:

Norton could not pick up any viruses etc.

So, I launched InBox (Microsoft Exchange) and found the "culprit" emails and deleted them from the InBox and from the Deleted Items box. Went back in. Opened Outlook, clicked on the Inbox and all worked perfectly.

Get rid of those RE: emails and I think it will solve your problem. Good luck.

I've had similar problems with email that doesn't include a subject line. This is what I know. First off, are you using Mcaffee VirusScan? This turned out to be the culprit for my situation. I troubleshooted the problem by running Outlook from a command prompt using the \safe option. This allowed me to run the program without the add-ins. Next I turned on the add-ins one-by-one to identify the problem child. It turned out to be the HAWK module from Mcaffee. I turned all of the modules back on except for the HAWK module and this solved the problem. Evidently, the HAWK module monitors every email for "unusual" behavior. I'm not sure what constitutes "unusual" behavior, but apparently empty subject lines is one of them. Outlook hasn't crashed since. This was solution one.

Solution two. A long time ago, I installed an application call Crash Defender from Quarterdeck. I never bought the program, I simply installed the trial version which isn't supposed to work beyond so many days. After the trial period, I removed the application from my Startup directory and haven't used it since. Here's the interesting part. Evidently the program still runs in the background, because when I receive an email without a subject, Crash Defender pops up and asks me if I want to "Fix" the problem. I click on yes, read the subject-less email, delete it and go on my merry way. This allows me to keep using the HAWK module running at the office.

I don't know if any of that helps, but taking a look at your add-ins might lead you in the right direction.

Good luck.

I get the same Problem I am using 98 SE and this is the problem Outlook Express 6 will not open and shuts down . This could be a very costly thing if I cant get into Outlook express to check the mail and deleate the bad message that caused the Problem as others has suggested. Below is the Errow

How funny is this I was searching for errors one of my users is having unrelated to Outlook (in this particular case), and my Outlook started giving me this error. After about 4 of these, it was followed by a Kernel32.dll error.

Here is what I want to know about installations which are experiencing this problem:
What Windows Version?
What Office Version, and Service Pack?
Outlook Corporate/WorkGroup Install? y or n
What version Internet Explorer?
What version of Internet Express?

As for me>>
OS = WinME
Office = Office 2000 SP 1
IE = MSIE 5.50.4134
Express = MSOutlook Express 6 << how many folks have this?

I'm going to run through an Office Repair and see if it helps.

Hello,
I got to this page as a result of exactly the same error as above...
I couldn't load Outlook at all as it closed itself once I had OK's the message.
After 2 hours I have finally (I hope) solved it as follws:
i managed to get back into outlook using the /Cleanviews switch. Run this from a DOS prompt (within windows) as I got an error when I tried to use the Start/run command. The best way to do this is to use Windows Explorer to find the folder where Outlook.exe resides (probably c:\program files\Microsoft Office\Office), then go to a DOS prompt (Start...Run...Command) and you should land at the same folder. Type "outlook.exe /cleanviews" without the quotes and press Enter. Outlook should now load (mine did).
When I tried to open a mail item, I got an error - couldn 't find Riched20.dll. After a bit of research, I suspected maybe I had the W32Nimda virus as it attacks this file, but when I tested for it my computer was clean. So I extracted the Riched20.dll file from c:\Windows\Options\Cabs\WIN_14.CAB back into the WINDOWS folder (I am running ME, but you should have the file on your installation disk if it's not at the above location).
Now I can load outlook and open items.

The problem might have been the missing RICHED20.DLL all along and I may not have needed to do the Cleanviews switch, but I had already done it, so there's no way of telling. If you're getting the same error message, then I would try restoring this file first and checking for viruses too.
Hope this helps someone
REgards to all long suffering Microsoft users out there!
Beverley.

I am getting an error message everytime I try to open an email, calendar entry or contact. I have repaired, uninstalled, reinstalled, and used Norton System Works to find "all" of my Windows problems.

I have changed the file from outllib.dll to outllib.old and reinstalled, still no luck.

I had a simular problem. Turns out it was a corrupted journal file. Look in the registry under HKCU\software\microsoft\office\9\outlook\journal

check where the log is being saved

go to that directory and delete the *.log files

My fix for the "invalid page fault in OUTLLIB.DLL..." was pretty easy. Outlook preview pane uses Internet Explorer to view any HTML or javascript. I upgraded IE to version 6 from 4. Problem solved.

RESOLUTION!

Running Windows ME & Office 2000 w/ Internet POP account(s)
Error msg: Outlook has caused an error in OUTLLIB.DLL

First, see if you can run Outlook in "Safe" mode (from enter "outlook.exe /safe") If outlook launches successfully you are on the road to recovery... Be sure all email accounts are accessed successfully, but don't worry about settings, options, preferences, etc.

Now, close Outlook.

Locate the file on your computer "OUTCMD.DAT". Check the date and time of the file and see if this corresponds to the last successful execution of Outlook (prior to receiving the OUTLLIB.DLL error). If so, simply rename the dat file to "OUTCMD.OLD" and run Outlook as you normally do. Outlook will create a new OUTCMD.DAT file and repair the error with OUTLLIB.DLL.

Verify all working aspects of Outlook including customized toolbars, dictionaries, templates, etc.
