I had a trojan which I used system restore and am showing no evidence of it. I also had winampfor the last 2 months, which heard there was a problem. When I go to use winamp it says, no sound device found, windows errors mmsystem002 a device id has been used that is out of date for your system. There is a web site which a guy has to so call fix it www.geocities.com/mmsystem002/ which I don't know if I should try it. In other sound programs I get bad direct sound driver. Error code 80004005 and direct sound output u2.2.6 error. I called tech support and they said oh well redo your hard drive. I can't uninstall and reinstall because I can't find it in devices. Can anyone help please??

Hi

You used the system restore disc? I'd assume this wiped windows and replaced it.

I had a brief look at the web page, but I would suggest not to hold much hope in fixing your problem.

First of all you need to find out if you have a sound card driver installed, and is it the correct driver. (system properties -- device manager)

For finding out problems with sound, use direct x diagnostics. (under system tools - system information -- tools in 98se) It will even tell you what sound card it thinks is installed.

I'll leave it at that, and let you run some tests.

You may need to get a driver for the sound card if someone has updated the sound card.

The system restore is the one to go back to an earlier date. In system tools it shows nothing. In my device manager it shows nothing. My computer shows no drivers or audio. I went in safe mode and noticed I should have a VIA AC 97 enhanced audio controller (wdm) but files and hardware are no where to be found.

Hi

Ok that sort of restore.

Go to system properties

In 98se (ME is very similar) right click my computer select properties, and then device manager.

If no sound drivers are there then you may need to locate a cound driver for your card (could be onboard sound)

Locating stuff for your computer. You could visit HP website and track down drivers for your computer model. Sometimes HP have a restore disc that you can get with all the drivers on it, which I've heard is rather inexpensive. (note sometimes)
