I reinstalled windows xp and the updated windows xp on me Dell dimension 8400, Intel 4 and lost my sound. Multimedia Audio Controller Code 28 - no driver and can't locate device It's a common problem, but I can't find a solution. All tutorials, diagnostics and Windows "how to's" are circuitous and a run-around.
I'm out of warranty, but there is an exception for Windows Updates. Must be invisible.
All I want is my sound back.

I came accross Pappy's suggestion while I was going around in circles amd getting frustrated beyond explanation in the past. I just wasn't patient enough to cqrefully read the instructions. Once I settled down a tad I followed the steps and created a list of needed drivers and immediately, at least, got audio back in my headphones, my primary source of audio use. A day later Windows notified me that Multimedia Updates were awaiting. I'm downloading that data right now. Perhaps after drafting this note I might have my speakers back as well. I,m sure the fact that I contacted the Windows Help Desk and threatened class action litigation didn't hurt either. Notwithstanding, thank you Pappy.
