I've just installed windows XP on a new PC and can't get the sound to work.
The motherboard is http://www.asrock.com/PRODUCT/K8NF4... and it has an onboard sound card.
I though the soundcard may have gone, so have tried to install a PCI soundcard, but that also doesn't work.
Device Manager shows under audio devices that the following are installed under sound video and game controllers with no conflicts: Audio Codecs, Legacy Audio Capture Devices, Media Control Devices, Standard Game Port and Video Codecs.
There is one device that has a yellow question mark and that is for a PCI Device.
Sound and Audio Devices under the Control Panel show all the sound options greyed out, and says that there are no audio devices??
Please help, I've looked everywhere and this problem is killing me!
Thanks in advance.

I've checked all that.
Everything now seems to be working on the PCI sound card I've installed, yet no sound is coming out of the speakers?
Device Manager now says I have a sound card and I now have volume control, but still no sound?

Double-click the sound tray-icon to launch advanced sound properties to check the various levels.
It's worth asking: are you certain you've connected the speakers to the correct soundcard output? Also, If this is five channel sound, you'd want to consult your manual
