New Optical mouse, no driver ?

Hi . .. just tried my new Optical mouse on my old 98 se comp. It has a serial port it's that old. Anyway i have installed a usb card some time ago to use my newer printer, worked fine. Now i get a message " Windows was unable to locate a driver for this device" checked for the file (hidclass.sys) and it's there, tried to re-install it but it says not on my Cd ? ........ any ideas how to get this mouse to work ? Thanks ...
