So here is the sad, sad story: I lost the device drivers to my old dell 2400, and the original operating system. So I installed a new operating system on it, a windows xp sp2 pro. I tried to use radarsync, an online hardware scanner to get the device drivers, but it didn’t work because the internet wasn’t working, probably because the nic driver wasn’t installed. So I got the nic and chipset drivers from the following links:
http://support.dell.com/support/dow...
http://support.dell.com/support/dow...
I tried to run these exes. A black command window appeared and disappeared in a flash, and I still couldn’t use the internet. I tried installing daemontools by running its exe. Same thing happened. So I formatted again and installed a dirrerent operating system than the previous two, a windows xp essential. Same thing happened. Please help!

you may try updating the nic driver from the device manager. if there is a conflict (yellow ?) on the nic adapter in the device manager list then select that and right click on it and choose update driver. choose the file that you have downloaded from its location and try running it this way. good luck
shenzen
