I have been working on this for 2 days, and currently stuck on one little file. I put it in search, which was how I found this site (the same problem was asked and answered on the WIN 9X forum) But, the solution seemed to be use a WIN 95 installation CD, which I don't have and don't know anyone who does.
I was given a computer to "learn on" (I have the one I am now using, so feel braver about trying things on the LEARN ON one). It isn't too large, a Packard Bell Multimedia 415. Only has a 33.3 K modem. It had WIN 95 in it, and the owners (my son and wife) had given up trying to use it. It was slow and full of junk (like gator software) from the owner before them.

I formatted the C drive, and installed WIN 98 from a full-version CD I have. (this wasn't as easy as it sounds, I had to learn DOS as I went along to do it, but I had a lot of help from people on TECH boards).

Then I couldn't get the modem driver set up. Tried the WIN 98 "generic" one and that wouldn't work. Apparenlty P=B has built in drivers you need for each modem.

Couldn't find it online, finally found someone who had had a computer like it, who told me the serial numbers and where to download the driver.'

I did this (on a floppy) and at one point it said to put in WIN 98 CD, which I did. Part way through it said it couldn't find flexfer.cnt file.

I tried SKIP THIS and it wouldn't. I tried downloading something (an upgrade?) from MSN that included this file, onto a floppy and at that point clicked HAVE DISK (A-drive) and it said it couldn't find it.

I found this board and people were asking about this same problem (different brand computers) and were told to put in a CD ROM for WIN 95, which includes it and WIN 98 doesn't.

There's no other way to get this file, like download it, or have someone send it to me?

I am planning to buy a 56K modem for the computer, which should come with the drivers, I've been looking and they don't seem expensive.

I'd still like to get it going now, just to have done it.

Thanks,
Carrie

when it asks for the disk after you say have disk switch to d or e whichever the windows 98 cd is in. then leave that like that and go to find under the start menu and search d for the file it needs to install your modem. if it comes up write down what the directory is and where you went to d for the file go through the folders to the directory the needed file is in and hit ok and it will install. if the file you need isnt under the cd find out what the name and company of your modem are and click the company under the left wher it has the list then the model of your modem under the company and hit install
