i have NEC ND3520a DVD +RW / Duellayer. BUT it does not work. XP SP1 sees it as a CD-rw/ordinary DVD.
meaning i can not burn dvds, but i can watch them.
do i need some other drivers?, but i cant find any??

Windows XP does not support DVDRW drives properly. You will need to install some DVD writing software. I use Nero Burning ROM; their website is www.nero.com There are alternatives, but it;s a matter of personal preference. Most drives come with some burning software, so check to see if there is anything on the CDs supplied with the drive.
Also, I would suggest updating to SP2 as there are a lot of security updates for Windows that you will not have installed!
