When I powere up the PC for the first time to install XP I get msg WL81020A.15A.0005.P04.0008221347
I hit Esc to continue the PC starts to load XP
from the CD and the last msg that I get is setup Starting Windows, nothing happens afterwards.

... looks like a bios (update?) file message(?) or its posting your bios version number?
... are you trying to install a fresh xp on this "unkown" pc?
... what are you trying to do?
... had you tried to flash the bios prior to this?
... the more info the better it is for us!

Yes, I am trying to install a legal copy of XP on this unknown PC. If I am not mistaken the ptrvious onwer had changed the CPU as well, to a faster one. What is flashing the BIOS?

... is xp already on the harddrive? ... ie will it start loading windows with that hookey xp on it?
... I am asking just to perhaps collate more info from within windows.

as far as I can tell there is nothing on the HD, when I take the XP CD out and try to boot up, the computer tries to read off the HD but then it retuens back to the BIOS msgs.

... enter yout bios and perhaps disable the bios post message(?)
... alter boot-up sequence to cdrom first ...save on exit

when I hit F8 I get the Windows advance options menu I tried the safe mode and debuging mode but both times it reboots the computer and bring me back to the original Gateway menu,when I tries to installed windows now that I am thinking about it , the computer never asked me if i wanted to format the HD or not,from previous installations on onother computer I had to do this.

for model I get INTEL III Pendium 800EB MHz with 512MB ram, as for hitting PF11, I get nothing, the last BIOs msg that I get is WL81020A ......... Hit Escape to continue aaaaaaand when I fit ESC it loops back to the GAteway logo and starts all over again

... "F11" (top row) key not "PF11" not a time to make errors
... we "all" make them ... ok ya!

... ok gateway bios try "F1" or "F2" key @ boot-up
... F8 was to see if you had xp still installed ...!
... F11 was for recovery!.
