Mouse works better without the drivers

Do you know if it's necessary that Microsoft IntelliMouse drivers are installed so that it functions properly? I've uninstalled, and reinstalled them several times because the mouse kept on losing some options. Actually, it's working normally without the drivers. I have another program though that I use to do the configurations. Is it a better idea to consider reinstalling them?
This doesn't actually answer your question but I have a Microsoft IntelliMouse to and I don't have the drivers installed either. The mouse works just fine without them.

i have the InteliMouse explorer TrackBall optical "mouse" and yes it will work with OR without the drivers but if you install the drivers on my type of mouse you get to "play with the options such as. The mose has 4buttons and a wheel and i can assign each button to do different things such as Enter Close Delete Copy Paste etc etc etc infact most all button presses or the system. i wouldnt be without it now but i know it will work without this feature so yes run it without drivers and u got a standard mouse or with and a better standard mouse
