When I am connected to my dialup ISP, I have 2 small computers in my lower right hand corner of my toolbar next to my time. They are both lit up when bytes are being sent and received. Sometimes (most of the time) they take forever to get going. Then, when they go off, I lose whatever I'm working on at the time but do not get disconnected to the internet. What causes these bytes to start and stop? Have got new phone lines, modem checks out ok, am ready to throw computer out the window! Anyone know what I'm talking about and have a solution to this problem? My techies at my ISP are clueless! Thanks to all!

... the bit I find odd"but do NOT get disconnected"...So when this happens you can click on internet explorer say and browse the net?

adjust your modem timeout sessions

... uncheck the box that says "disconnect a call if idle for more than (**) mins

Thank you Mavis for the tip. I already have the box unchecked so when I'm idle I do NOT get disconnected. I also do not use IE; I prefer Mozilla Firefox. My ISP is Copper.net and when I dial them up, I have these 2 small computers that light up to show that my computer is sending and receiving info. I think this is only available on Copper. Never noticed it on Netzero before. I cannot do anything but wait for the computer to come out of whatever it goes into when this happens. I'm sorry that I can't explain this any better. I'll be very glad when we get DSL in our area of the woods. Thanks again.

"...I have these 2 small computers.."

... yes thats normal I now have them after doing a google search and I thought they were just for dial-up!

... I enabled them by going to START> Control Panel > Network Connections

... Right click the icon and go to PROPERTIES.

... Tick that box that says "SHOW ICON IN NOTIFICATION AREA WHEN CONNECTED".

... if I place mouse cursor over them its shows connection speed

The box that you mentioned is already checked. This does allow me to see my connection speed. The problem I am having Mavis is that when these 2 small computers are not lit up, my computer is not sending or receiving any info. I just can't figure out why the computer does this. I don't know if it's the ISP, phone lines bad somewhere or the computer itself. Thanks for your time.

... thats when you're disconnected...

... Question: when these 2 small computers are NOT lit up can you navigate through your internet browser?

... I suspect not...

You guessed right. The computer just sits there and won't do anything until the computers come back on. Thanks again.

"...the computer just sits there and won't do anything until the computers come back on..."

... so the pc modem must redial to establish a connection!

"...My techies at my ISP are clueless! ..."

... feeding misleading info does not help those trying to help you, one can be thrown "off track" looking for a time consuming solution!

... it could be something simple like someone trying to phone "that number" ...some process may be kicking off the modem!

To Mavis - My problem has been resolved. I found an update to the modem that I have in my computer from Major Geeks website, downloaded it for free and now my computer is working great! Thank you for the time you spent with your advice.
