Microphone won't record

Hi guys, I'm kinda new to working inside a PC,have started an A+ on line and really enjoying the learning process, but have along way to go. My problem, I recently purchased a new PC (It has a PM8M3-V motherboard with a Pentium 4 processor 531) and loaded up Windows 2000 and Windows Office 2000, utilities etc. Everything seems to work fine except that the microphone does not record. The audio driver is Realtek AC97 Audio. The earphones work fine, and the mike works in a friends PC but not in mine. I supsect a driver problem, a setting or something but am not sure. Any suggestions on how to make it work? Thanks
