Microphone needs more boost

My external microphone does not work well with my new Toshiba Satellite P205-S6267 notebook, with Vista Home Premium. The computer barely detects my voice through the front jacks, even after boosting it to the maximum 30 Db. The manufacturer of the microphone says that it is compatible with my Vista Home Premium. The sound card is Realtech High dDefinition Audio. Yes,the mic has been unmuted, and the headphone part of the headset works perfectly, loud and clear.
