I'm trying to install a Canon 1220U scanner on either side of my 2000 Pro/XP Pro dual-boot. When I get the new hardware found prompt, the scanner shows up as an unknown device (with the exclamation point) in the Device Manager.
Despite having run the TWAIN driver removal program specified by Canon, and reinstalling the drivers from another of their little pieces of software, the end result is the same: "The installation failed because a function driver was not specified for this device instance".
Under Universal Serial Bus Connectors, I have 4 labeled as Intel 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller- each with a different designation: 24D2, 24D4, 24D7 & 24DE. There are also 4 labeled as USB Root Hub, all of which appear at Location 0 when I bring up their properties. This is where the scanner shows up. I also see where it triggers the HotPlug in the System Tray as if it were a hard drive. If I click on it and attempt to "stop it", it has no effect and continues to remain in the system as an unknown device. From all that I've been able to find out from my searching, Micro$oft is calling it a "third party issue" and Canon says M$ is to blame. (Typical?)
By the way - The USB ports work fine for my mouse and my copier.
What am I missing here? I've got a huge box of photographs waiting on me - I sure would like to get back to scanning 'em in... Any help here would be greatly appreciated!

Unfortunately no I am not having the same issues as you are. Mine is less complicated but also having the same negative results. I am going to uninstall the software again and start all over. Is there a web site for canon that has the twain driver uninstall tool? I no when you use the windows uninstall program there are still files left and I believe the driver is one of them. I think that may have been my problem but am not sure.

Well... for some reason, the Canon site won't let me get to the page I want to give you the link to but, if you go here:
http://www.canonusa.com/html/index1.jsp
you should be able to click on the Download Library tab at the top and find what you need.
