I have a Toshiba Satellite 5105-S901 with Windows XP Pro that uses NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go. I get the BSOD mentioning an infinite loop with nv4_disp.dll.
I have gone to many sites to update the driver including Driverguide.com,
guru3d.com, Microsoft, and Toshiba. I also went to NVIDIA's site for updates and even a unified driver. This all seemed to work, but only temporarily. Before I even started getting the blue screens, I had to reboot my computer several times, because it started out fine, then the display went to a plaid, grainy pattern, then everything got wiped off the screen. It left the screen looking like what I've seen in those old reel to reel movies where the final screen is bright white and unevenly burned black around the edges if this makes any sense. Then black takes over most of the screen. At the moment it looks again like everything is fine. But I know it's just a matter of time. I have Norton Antivirus which is up to date and it finds no virus. SpySweeper also came up clean. I keep ZoneAlarm running at all times.Yes, I have tried uninstalling in safe mode and letting the system reinstall the drivers upon restarting, but no luck there either. It works for a little while, then starts acting up again. I even let the Toshiba Pinger evaluate my system. Nvidia was the only thing listed, but it said my software was up to date. I'm really puzzled. I haven't been playing any video games, so I don't know what happened suddenly for me to have all these problems. I haven't recently installed any new software. Even so, I did do a system restore as far back as it would go, but that didn't help for long either. I have tried rolling back drivers etc. I even replaced the original drivers by using one of the recovery CDs that came with the laptop. No luck. As per a suggestion on another message board, I went to msconfig and boot.ini in order to uncheck the Safeboot box, but it was already unchecked. Lastly, I tried to upgrade the Bios with a file found on the Toshiba website. So after updating, upgrading, uninstalling, reinstalling, rolling back, restoring, and recovering, I can't imagine what I might have left out. The problem continues. Please help. Thanks in advance.

I have exactly the same problem. Once when I was convinced I'd got it working, I cloned my PC to DVD, then checked PC was still OK. Then later I had the same problem I cloned it straight back ... only I still had the same problem. Unless anyone surprises me with some revelation that I'm missing here I'd say that our graphics cards were faulty (hardware problem) and may be overheating if the fan is noisy?? Please kindly let me know if you solve this problem or find out what's wrong. Good luck, John t1ppex@mail2usa.com

When I Googled this I found many refrences to this problem. I found forums with posts from '01 with this very problem in them. But I was unable to find a solution that worked.

Now I'm taking matters into my own hands, I created a forum dedicated to fixing this problem. If you can help us troubleshoot please go to http://s13.invisionfree.com/nv4_disp or if you're expierencing the problem please go there and fill out your computer's setup. This way we can identify common threads and figure out precisely what causes the problem.

I have the same problem with nv4_disp, and I have the errors on the monitor.
My graphic card is Gainward GeForce FX 5700 Ultra. I don't have any ideas what to do with this:/

I have a new Dell XPS system with two NV7800GTX cards in SLI. Top of the line. Killer system. Only problem is I BSOD once a day with stop due to nv4_disp in infinite loop. Latest was opening up Google Earth using the OpenGL mode (rather than DirectX). No idea if it's a driver bug, a hardware defect, both, OpenGL specific, or what. I opted for premium Dell Tech Support, and I'll report back if they provide a solution...
