how to unmute the microphone in windows vista

I have a dell inspiron 1525.. running on windows vista ultimate.. the mic has gone on mute .. i was able to make a call on skype ..but not on any other messengers.. so i used my dell driver and utilities CD and now the microphone itself has become unavailable when i check the sound options and properties.. i have no idea how to bring it back on.. please help
