how to run .dat files in media player

Hi,, I have windows 2000 installed with media player 7.1. I have some movies with extension as .dat. Media player is not able to play them. How to make it play , do i need to install any drivers,if so what are they and from where they are available.
Are they any other utilities that play the .dat files other than media player
