I have a customer (a dentist) who is trying to install the Epson Twain Pro driver for his Epson 1680 Professional scanner on his laptop under XP Pro. Without that driver the transparency unit of the scanner won't work, and so currently he cannot scan his dental x-rays. He downloaded the driver file from Epson's site, and unzipped it.
BUT: there seems to be no way for him to install the driver. There is no "refresh" or "update" driver option. The driver files do not include any executables, just inf, dll and others. I had him remove the scanner icon from the control Panel, then disconnect and reconnect the scanner.
When I did that on my own computer (also with XP Pro), after a few seconds I got a "Found New Hardware wizard" window, and from then on installing the driver was a breeze. But he does not get that wizard. He sees only a list of devices, but his scanner is not on that list. Clicking on the "Have disk" button and navigating to the folder where the unzipped driver files are, does not work either. Eventually I was able to duplicate his screens on my PC, and I got stuck, too.
I think if I could get that "found new hardware wizard" to start on his computer, I could help him.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

This may work, control panel/scanners and cameras in the left panel select add imaging device, this will bring up a wizard, If the device is in the list select it and follow the prompts, if given the browse dialog, browse to the downloaded files and select the .inf files as these are what install wizard should be looking for.
