how do i know what driver to get if....

i dont know what kind of sound card it is? i looked at it and all it has is a serial number on it...recently we reinstalled windows 98 and this computer was given to me..is there any way?

Guess it would help to know if the soundcard is original and what computer are you talking about ? If its a Packard Bell or Gateway, for example, you can go to their website and enter the serial number to get what was in the machine as it left the factory.
Is there an FCC ID number on it ? What name or number is on the biggest chip on the card ? That might help narrow it down.

you could get something like Dr Hardware and let that interrigate your hardware to see what it is.... :-)
