O.K. here goes:I have a Pavilion 532w that shipped with XP but I formatted & installed Win98.Sound is onboard {SoundMax} and I have tried a hundred drivers with no luck. If I knew the model of the MoBo I could figure this out.All I can gather is that the board is a Brookedale Validation something or another/MB wizard says unknown/ chipset is Intel 2560 rev 1. Could someone please help me to restore my sound?

Gday.

On the mainboard itself, please look for a chip just below the last PCI slot. There should be a real tiny chip. Get me the numbers and i might help out.

Thankx for the help guys. I have now determined that the board is an Imperial-the # is 309011/also saysMat#129956.The tiny chip is:ADI981A-this one must be the sound-thanks Charliesz.I still need to figure out the exact driver for this situation. I've tried a bunch of these at the link you specified Linda-maybe I will get the right one sooner or later. Granz

If you get a menu to download Chinese language just click cancel to get to the drivers page.

Take care,

Linda

I am at a standstill here. That should be the correct driver Linda, but guess what-nothing. I uninstalled the previous driver & put that one in-is there some installation program that I'm missing or what? I moved the 98 drive into slave &put XP back on primary drv. and sound works there. While using XP there's an icon for SoundMax on control panel with all kinds of settings & vol. ctrls.- if I copy all the files from the XP one maybe it will work? I'm going to play phone tag with HP support but I don't think they will have the answer.Keep up the good detective work and thanx again!GRANZ
