Subject: Graphics problem
OS: XPpro and ME
CPU/Ram: Processor x86 Family 15 M
Model/Manufacturer: ASUS A8VAM-SE
Comment:
An unusual problem I expect.
I have both Windows XP and ME installed in different partitions on the same HD.
I have to keep ME for some bits of important software which cannot be upgraded and which XP cannot adjust for with its compatability wizard.

Of necessity I have recently had installed a new motherboard and new graphics card. on XP
I could not get a graphics card which supported both XP and ME, and ME has reverted to the Standard PCI Graphics Adaptor (VGA) 16 colours.
The new graphics card is VIA/S3G. (? – there is no manual with it)
Motherboard ASUS A8VAM-SE (does that sound right?)

Does anyone know of a way to get decent graphics back for ME.
I get the impression from this forum that nothing can be done to improve the PCI card beyond 16 colours.
Is there anything that would let me link ME in to the new graphics card?
The other option might be to use ME to install a second graphics card, at a lower level suitable for ME but still acceptable to the motherboard. I was given to understand that this is not possible.

A8VAM-SE is not the correct model identifier see:

http://www.asus.com.tw/search.aspx?...

The On-Board Graphics is a VIA S3 therefore try here for a driver:

http://www.viaarena.com/default.asp...

Though you will need to identify the actual CHIPSET as VIA S3 is the manufacturer.

Magic! Thanks
My motherboard is A8V-VM SE
chipsets: North bridge VIA KBM890; South bridge VIA VT8237A.

Following your advice I found and installed an ME driver for the northbridge, and now have a good picture.
Two more questions:
1) The little icon for graphics control has not appeared. Its a good screen but I can't at present adjust or control it. Should there be a driver for the southbridge, or something else I need?
2) An associated question. The installation and loading speed is drastically reduced, i.e. 30 mins for an installation taking 4 mins on XP. Should I be installing any motherboard drivers for my ME partition?

Hope these are reasonably intelligent questions, my technical knowledge is fairly low.

In Windows ME you can only control the Resolution & Refresh Rate (75), if the screen is off centre then the monitor has its own controls to adjust this. The reason for this is the driver from VIA are a general purpose driver, not customised like the one used for XP...

Personally would leave well alone and not install the Chipset drivers if it is working OK!
