Subject: Geforce 4 ti4400 Driver Problems

Comment: I’m having great difficulty getting my newly acquired Creative 3D Blaster 4 Titanium 4400 to perform as it should. Basically I think there are driver problems. When installing the drivers you are given the option to install the card as either ‘NVIDIA Geforce4 Ti4400’, or as ‘3D Blaster 4 Titanium 4400’. Initially I chose the former (particularly as the manual said to) but found that Max Payne, Unreal Tournament and GTA3 would not play for more than literally 5 seconds before crashing. They would constantly freeze, return to the desktop or I’d get the blue screen of death. So after much messing around I decided to reinstall the drivers stating the card was a 3D Blaster 4 Titanium 4400 (despite Windows warning me it was not a digitally signed driver) and things did improve. Unfortunately things are still not running smoothly: Black & White and GTA3 freeze frequently, Grand Prix 4 crashes often (that blue screen of death again) and Unreal Tournament still won’t run at all. Windows often reports that nv4_disp.dll is the cause so I tried updating the Detonator XP drivers from 27.50 (the only remotely stable version I’ve used) but any updates do more harm than good and tend to make games that ran fine before crash, without fixing any of the problems with other games. Strangely though, the likes of Quake III, Wolfenstein and Medal of Honor all run perfectly regardless of what drivers I got installed, but then again they do all use the Quake engine. I tried downloading drivers direct from the Creative website instead of from NVIDIA but all to no avail. My System is an Athlon 1.4Ghz, 448MB RAM, SB Live! Value all fixed to a Gigabyte GA-7ZXR Rev3.0 motherboard running Windows XP (I recently updated from Windows ME hoping to fix the problems, but all for nothing). Any suggestions?

Reply: (edit)Lo. I had same kinda probs with my Sparkle GF4Ti4400.1.4Athlon.. RTCW etc. ran ok but ut was bad. RTCW& Q3 uses opengl. And my UT runs on D3D. What I did was after trying win98 WinXP and no joy, was,in this order, 1. install win me 2. install dets (30.30) are very good and stable otherwise 28.32 or 29.42) 3. install DX8.1b 4. install display again 5. install other devices If you dont want to do a fresh install of windows, use add/remove prog. uninstall the nvidia drivers. DO NOT REBOOT. use detonator deleter/destroyer to remove remaining det. files/settings. install as standard vga and reboot. Install new dets. Install DX8.1b again. Hope this helps.
