Game corrupted sound driver ?

My sister who does not have any exprience in troubleshooting PC problems asked me if I could repair her PC .What happen was she was in the middle of playing a game when she recieved an error message, that her sound driver had become corrupted. Sure enogh her sound is not working and no speaker icon in taskbar. Over the phone I had her look in Device manager and as expected there is a yellow ! mark. She has no recovery disk , I have Windows Me on my PC. Would installing a registry backup fix a corrupted driver ? Or removing her sound in device manager and then letting Windows detect it and reinstall it work ? Any suggestions appreciated ! Thanks to All,Nick
