Hello

I have a problem with a Fujitsu Lifebook B142, Celeron 300mhz, 160 mb ram, running windows 98SE. I have been using an external usb 2.5" travelstar hard drive (also connects via ps2) which is now no longer recognised.
I guess the drivers have become corrupted. It appears as an unknown usb device in device manager, with a code 28 message. Unfortunately I do not have a copy of the installation diskette or cd.
There is no brand name on the case of the external drive, just 'usb 1.1 2.5" harddisk.' The travelstar is 48gb model: IC25T08ATDA05-0.
This is what appears in system information, which detects the drive as a problem device:

Capabilities: Class: SCSIAdapter
ClassGUID: {4d36e97b-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
ConfigFlags:
DeviceDesc: USB Mass Storage Device
HardwareID: TEST\TEST_SCSI
WARNING: This driver cannot be saved. The INF file can not be located: SCSI_011.INF

thanks for any help

I'm very sorry the code I posted was wrong, it's:
IC25T048ATDA05-0

The drive power light is on, cables are fine.

Hi Peter.

The drive is an IBM Travelstar.

It is made by Hitachi.

This is what Hitachi says about drivers on their website.

Where do I get drivers?

We do not provide drivers for disk drives.

Drivers for disk controllers are included with the operating system. Hard Drives do not require drivers.

So your OS disk controller might be corrupted.

Right click on your disk controller and then properties.

Choose Update Driver then automatic search for best driver.

If that doesn't work, go to the Microsoft site and run Windows Update.

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Maybe the you can update the corrupted disk controller file this way.

You could also try to remove the USB Mass Storage Device then reboot the computer and let Windows reinstall the driver.

Take care,

Linda

Hi Peter,

I am very curious if you fixed the problem as I am having the same as well with an IBM Travelstar 20GB in an external IBM travelstar USB case. I am also trying to figure out the same messages you are getting with recognising an UNKNOWN device.

My drive is also powered up green, cables fine , however I get constant ticking sounds until it cuts out and can't recognise drive on OS.

Anyhelp is appreciated

Cheers
Chak

Hello,

I had the same problem with my external USB2.0 IBM HD. The green light was ON and the IBM HD seemed to spin OK.
What I did, I went and I bought a new enclosure from Fry's Electronics and IT FIXED THE PROBLEM. This is the link:
http://shop4.outpost.com/search?search_type=regular&query_string=2.5+enclosure&cat=
It might not guarantee that it fixes the problem, but at least you will see which part became defective, the HD or the enclosure.

Good Luck...
Marian.
