I bought a Compaq External DVD Drive that plugs into the USB port. When I plug it in my computer does not recognize it at all. I probably need a driver but where do I go to get one?

... try rebooting the pc with the device plugged in!

... after that if it still does not see it go to "start" run (type) devmgmt.msc [press ENTER]

... see any yellow markers?... if so right click + update driver

... also try rght click "My Computer" click manage double click storage double click disk management

... do you see the usb drive listed?... if so r/click change drive letter and paths

Thanks so much for trying to help me.

I rebooted with the device plugged in an on - did not work.

I went to the run menu and entered devmgmt.msc but did not see any yellow markers. Everything is listed except the subject external DVD drive.

I right clicked on my computer and went to storage and disk management. The usb drive was not listed. I have a CD drive installed in the machine at it was the only thing listed.

Any other ideas? Thanks again for trying to help!

... when you plug it in while in "Windows" does it make a windows sound?... also when you unplug it? (hot swapping)

... if "NOT" can you hear activity from the extenal drive to indicate that its on? ... does it have its own power source?

When you plug it in there is no sound to indicate that it is being recognized by the computer at all and the external drive makes no sound even if you put a DVD in it. It has it's own power source and it is plugged in and definately on (it has a blue light on the side and the light is on). I even tried two different USB cables thinking the cable might be faulty. Any other ideas??? Thanks again.

... can you post the make and model of this device please.

... have you tried plugging anything else into your usb ports to see that they work ok?

... if the other devices are plugged in ie ...printer etc please unplug and reboot with external usb drive in.

... does your device show up work on another pc?
