Subject: Error when upgrading ATI drivers
OS: WIN ME
CPU/Ram: AMD2000/256MB
Comment:

Whenever I try and upgrade ATI drivers I get a message 'INFSetup caused error in Krnl386.exe' then my display gets screwed when I am forced to re-boot. A problem identical to this can be found at

http://www.computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/34593.html

Does anybody have an answer to this? I have exactly the same problem as described and I'm rapidly losing my hair!

My faith in ATI products is now non-existant, their old drivers don't work with most games and when you try and update the drivers even their Installation package doesn't work.

Hi Pete515.

Did you remove the old drivers first?

ATI is fussy about that.

After removing the old driver, don't reboot.

Try installing the new driver and then reboot.

In Control Panel -

Remove the old video driver in Device Manager.

Also check your Add/Remove Programs and remove ATI Display driver from there if is listed.

Take care,

Linda

Thanks for the reply,

That's the real beaut - I even had problems UNINSTALLING the old drivers. When I tried (using Add/Remove program) I got the response "Unable to Access" or somesuchlike and the drivers were still there.

I then tried installing OmegaaATI drivers where the author says you don't need to uninstall first with same INFSETUP/KRNL386 error.

Next I removed my Panda AV, booted into Safe Mode and eventually managed to Uninstall and get into VGA mode. Still I wasn't able to install either of the new ATI drivers.

I tell you, I've aged 20 years in 2 weeks with ATI - I'll never buy one of their products again.

Thanks, if you can suggest anything more I'm more than willing to give it a go. I'm getting pretty desparate. I've also written to ATI support (ha ha) and I'm awaiting their repsonse.

Pete.

Hi Pete.

What ATI drivers are you trying to install and for what video card?

If the newest drivers are giving you trouble, you could try installing one of the older versions. ATI has an archived video driver page.

Take care,

Linda

Hi Linda,

Thanks again for your advice. It's an 'All In Wonder Radeon' (as in 'Wonder if it'll work this time'). The driver is the latest one listed on the ATI site for AIW Radeon/WindowsME (can't be more specific as I'm writing this from the Office and the PC is at home) but I'm going to take your advice and see if I have better luck using an older driver. I'm also going to make sure I do everything in Safe Mode in case there is a clash with other drivers.

Regards and thanks for your time.

Pete.

Hi Pete.

I just received the ATI Radeon All In Wonder 128 MB card today.

Haven't installed it yet. I am replacing an ATI Radeon 7200 64 MB card.

I also have Windows ME.

I will probably install it Friday or Saturday.

Hopefully I won't come across the same problem you're having. I have used several ATI cards throughout the years and never had trouble with the installation process.

Hope you can get yours working.

Take care,

Linda

Like you Iam also totally frustrated with ATI .I have an ATI RADEON Graphics card , plus the ATI TV WONDER USB Edition . I installed DirectX 9.0 , so I wanted to update my display driver since I was still using the originial driver off the installation CD. I could not get the updated driver to download off ATI's web site .When I would click on the download link I would end up with a blank white page and nothing would happen .I sent ATI support at least 4 or 5 emails , begging them to help me with this problem .They finally replied and provided me a "direct link" to the display driver ! Well guess what ,no driver to download , just error #404 , unable to find web page etc. I have never had so much trouble trying to update a driver .I have all but given up for now .Iam on a dial up modem , so I sent a friend of mine the link (he has cable internet) see if he can download it to a floopy for me !
Good Luck,Nick

Thanks for the replies.

Linda, best of luck with your new card. I've been OK with the original drivers on the CD it was just when I had to upgrade the fun and games started (or should that be stopped). Judging by the error messages I'm guessing it is something to do with the options in the InstallShield part of the program. I'd be interested to hear the driver version you got with your CD once you are up and running.

Nick, at least you got an answer of sorts - my email to ATI seems to have gone straight to their recycle bin but I have to admit I wasn't expecing much given their reputation. I think I've had the black screen as well at some stage - fortunately DriveImage came to my rescue. I really dread to think how much time I've spent on this problem but it would have been even worse if I didn't have a DriveImage to fall back on.

Since I'm on a rant I may as well say I've visited loads of bulletin boards trying to find a solution and there are some pretty hacked off people when it comes to ATI. Not just home users but fully qualified systems engineers seem to have victim at some stage.

Regards to all of you and have a nice Easter.

Pete.

Hi Pete.

I installed my ATI All in Wonder 8500 card last night.

I got the same message as you. I tried installing the Catalyst 3.2 drivers.

Then I tried the 3.1 drivers and then the 2.5 drivers.

Nothing worked.

I had used both the 2.5 and 3.1 Catalyst drivers with my Radeon 7200 card with no problems.

It must be an issue with the All in Wonder cards or WIN ME or a combination of the two.

So I installed the drivers that came on the disk and everything is working fine.

The drivers are dated 1/30/02.

This is the first ATI card I have had where the drivers can't be updated.

Take care,

Linda

Hi Linda,

I bet your heart was in your mouth at some stage during the install. Like you I've given up on the Catalyst drivers and I'm just sticking with my original drivers (even if it means I can't play Civilisation3 and a few other games). I'm seriously thinking about getting a new card as well (bet you can't guess which manafacturer ISN'T on my shortlist) which is a real shame because:-

1. I'm sure the AIW card is V Good when it comes to specifcation.
2. It wasn't cheap!

Anyway, hope your new card is all OK - you have my admiration for a comparitively smooth install.

Regards

Pete.

Well I was having this same problem, but found a solution. I am running Windows 98SE, hopefully this will work for you.

After you download the drivers, you double click the setup file and it extracts the data to a temporary directory. I used the latest catalyst drivers, and the directory it extracted to was: C:\ATI\support\wme-radeon-7-84-030228a1-008040c-efg\

After the installation crashes, reboot in to safe mode (or just ctrl+alt+delete the setup and force it to close completely). Go to that directory I mentioned above, there should be a folder labled: 9X_INF\
Go into that folder and you will see the infsetup.exe file and a few others. Find this file: C9_08040.inf and open it. If that file isn't there, there should be a similar one. It may be different in windows ME, I'm not sure. The file should be opened in a Plain text editor.

You will see this somewhere in there:

[version]
Class=DISPLAY
signature="$Windows 95$"
Provider=%Mfg%
DriverVer=02/28/2003, 4.14.01.9088
CatalogFile=C9_08040.CAT

Change it to this:

[version]
Class=DISPLAY
signature="$Windows 95$"
Provider=%Mfg%
DriverVer=02/28/2003, 4.14.01.9088
;CatalogFile=C9_08040.CAT

(note teh semi-colin on the last line, thats all you need to change)

Save the file. Reboot to normal mode (I don't think setup will run in safe mode) go back to the main directory where the files were extracted, and run setup.exe. Don't run the downloaded file becaus eit will overerite the modified file. I hope that works for you, good luck.

I happened to find this forum by search engine trying to fix my problem. I found the answer on another forum and figured I would post it here.

Hi Richard,

I too am getting the same error message as Pete515. I am going to try your solution as soon as I finish typing this (at 640x480, btw) :-)

Just thought I'd mention that the Catalyst drivers can be extracted with WinRAR and the same edit can be made to C9_08040.inf without rebooting to safemode. Just make the edit and run the setup program from where you extracted the files.

Ron

Hi.

I had the same problem. I got a "infsetup caused a general protection fault in module infsetup.exe at 0001.00001da4" whenever trying to install the 3.2 Catalysts. Even tried removing the old ones first. Tried everything. No joy.

Commenting out the line (as stated above) worked for me. Now they have installed just fine. Thanks alot man!
