Windows spontaneously shuts down & I get a bluescreen "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated." After running Norton 360 diagnostics, I get 2 "inoperable hardware" messages: "Officejet J6400 series Device is disabled (code 22) Root\Printer\0000" and
Officejet J6400 series Device is disabled (code 22) Root\Multifunction\0000". Likewise, under Microsoft's Control Panel under System Information under Problem Devices, there are two similar listings: Officejet J6400 series ROOT\MULTIFUNCTION\0000 This device is disabled. and Officejet J6400 series ROOT\PRINTER\0000 This device is disabled. However, under Device Manager, the Device Status shows that the printer is working properly and the Device Usage scroll bar shows that the device is enabled. The printer/fax/scanner/copier works from this computer.
I have updated, uninstalled and reinstalled the printer drivers multiple times both from the web and the installation CD, including a level 3 uninstall from the installation CD (as requested by the HP chat representative). The Norton chat representative advised that the drivers were configured incorrectly. Please help me to prevent the spontaneous shut down of Windows when diagnostics show that the printer is disabled but the device manager shows that the printer is enabled. I'd appreciate any suggestions.Windows XP version 5.1 (service pack 3)

Gateway 500s (purchased in 2002, but replaced power supply and added more RAM)thanks so much

... install a printer driver a number of times perhaps installation with the cable attached prior to the software asking to "connect" the printer may have contributed to a windows error!
... you could try right click "My Computer" click properties > advanced (tab) > by Startup and Recovery "settings" (tab) "untick" automatically restart
... aswell as Control Panel > Administrave tools >Event Viewer ... double click "Application" look for red errors double click will show time stamp plus further error info.
... do the same on "system" in event viewer
... this may throw in more light!
... please post back... we may have some insight.
