Driver Installation on a new hard drive

September 8, 2010 at 13:55:47
Specs: Windows XP

I installed a new hard drive on my laptop computer (Dell Inspirion 6000) I then installed XP Home Edition Service Pack 2. In Device Manager my ethernet controller, multimedia audio controller, network controller, (video controller - this has an red x thru yellow question mark) and video controller(VGACompatible) has yellow question marks next to them. I can not get on Internet from that computer, so i used aother computer, went to dell and downloaded all the drivers they specfied you would need after installing a new xp program. I downloaded the notebook, chipset, video, broadcom driver, quikset, audio, modem, wireless card, touchpad. I downloaded drivers to a removable storage device, transfered them to the desktop of my laptop. When I Idoubleclick the icon a Open With box appears that list Internet Explorer(which i can not access) Notepad, Paint, Windows Media Player, Windows picture. and Wordpad and a browse option. Questions: Do I need to install the entire list of drivers Dell specify ? Where does the Notebook and Chipset drivers go to, those are indicated to go in first and second install order. How do i install the drivers when the Open With box comes up. The more I read and research I become more confused. The xp program I used is an xp program sent from Dell but for my Dell Desktop, not my laptop, also sent was drivers and utilities cd's but im unsure if the laptop and desktop has same drivers and utilities so I have not tried to use those driver cd's Can Someone please assist me I need this computer for school. Thank You

open an explorer window then go to tools/folder options/view and show file extentions. What are the file extentions of the drivers? If they are .zip or .rar you will need a program like 7zip to extract them.
if they are .exe then the .exe file extention is not associated correctly

If you can not get on internet from the laptop there must be a way to access the internal modem if you can not because there is no modem then that is what you should focus on or use a usb connection from the other computer and download what you need from there the gist is you need to have outside support so I would fix your modem and then the products you have obtained can be opened with internet support and away you go

I have already downloaded drivers from computer with internet access and transfered them to my laptop. I need to know how to install them. Open With windows comes up and im lost after that. on previous occasions when I installed drivers when I clicked on them they had an self-extracting wizard that did the installation process. I believe that was thru the Download Manager which i can not access. The Open With windows comes up, don't know installation process with this window.

"Weeda"... as "jgreenkc" suggested #1 open any folder or "My Computer"

... in the folder window top row click "tools" (tab) then folder options then view (tab)

... uncheck "Hide extensions of known file types" click "Apply"

... then post back the downloaded filename.extension......thx
