Subject: Driver Canon LBP 460 |
Comment: I have a Canon LBP 460 printer and both Canon and Microsoft don't supply drivers for this printer for Windows 2000. As I am loath to spend the money on a new printer(especialy as I have just bought a new toner cartridge)could someone advise me where I can get a Windows 2000 Pro driver for this printer or a printer driver that will operate this printer. I am getting desperate Thanks

Reply: (edit)Hi Chris, I am having the same problem too. I can't find anything either so I think I will set up a dual boot-up with 98/2K. I'll use 98 to print and 2000 for everything else. The only problem is that some programs will have to be installed twice! Terry

Reply: (edit)I too am having a problem with it. I have complaints in to Canon and am about to contact the attorney General. It have been escalated to supervisors and supervisor supervisors. Send your email address to me(stephenr[at}rocketmail.com and I wil keep on complaining and Add you all to the signee's of the note and CC you on the message. That whole Windows printing system thing is a big bunch of junk. It isn't hard to right the system level driver for a piece of hardware. A group effort is better than a single effort.

Reply: (edit)It seems that we all have the same "problem": Canon just hasn't a driver for the LBP-460 that supports Windows NT nor Windows 2000/XP. This is the LATEST Canon-product I've bought.

Reply: (edit)Well, Here in Australia, they're running the "You can on a Canon - Can do" advertising campaign. With my Canon LBP-460, I can't do. I'm also running Win2000. Don't bother trying similar sounding driver names (that's what canon told me to do) - they don't work.

Reply: (edit)well, it seems that I am a fairly recent member to the ever-growing list of disappointed consumers. We have placed our faith in the Canon corporation, and in Microsoft, and are once again disappointed. I am currently running Windows XP (not for much longer...) and the only printer I have had the time to work with is my LBP-460. I am inundated with frustration as I realise that my LBP-460 may be ready for an early retirement regardless of the fact that it is in full working order. One should think that if they can land men on the moon, they can create up-to-date printer drivers. Or do I again smell the sweet scent of a conspiracy?? I long to hear my friend repeat that nostalgic phrase "Printing Complete", and will not rest until I have done so.

Reply: (edit)It is such a disappointment to put in over $2000 on a new system and find out that Canon was so stupid as to not make the LBP-460 compatible with 32bit OS's......what the heck were they thinking. The printer is not that old and that's what ticks me off. I haven't heard back from Canon since I e-mailed them a complaint.....probably cause I told them if they don't offer any suggestions I would tell people not to buy there product.

Reply: (edit)I've just upgrade to WinME. Wholly s---, I forgot 460 driver has no uninstaller.. I really hate this one. No driver update since Win98. It has so many defects, papers are always jamming, envelopes too. But now I'm so happy with my new Brother's HL1240,trouble free, stress free, it just works fine. People lets stop buying Canon products! (how about Ixus digital..)

Reply: (edit)Same problem here and the printer is working fine so its so unfortunate that it could not be put to work just because of a printer driver issue. I'm running WIN2K if I knew I would have this problem with this OS I should have stuck with 98 and avoided all this driver issues. Canon should stop making printers then if they could not support their own devices.

Reply: (edit)This is answer from canon. Dear Konstantin Thank you for your inquiry. This printer was manufactured to use Win3.1 and Win95 drivers. Unfortunately, there are no drivers for Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2K, Windows XP, or Windows NT. I apologize greatly for any inconvenience. Thank you for your interest in Canon. We look forward to assisting you in the future. Sincerely, Angela Product Support Representative

Reply: (edit)Well, after many days of struggling i found that the lbp 460 at least does run on win98, only for some dark strange occult reason you need to actually Put The Driver Information That You Downloaded On 3 Floppy Disks (at least disk #1), and finish all progs exept for explorer and systray when installing, printerport needs to be on ECP (control panel>system>devices>ports). you might wanna try update driver in the controlpanel > devices, if it gives an error say yes. if it still doesnt work try to change the values of the parallel portmode in the bios, EPP, SPP, ECP etc. (dont know how well i translated this all, cause i have this info from the dutch canon people). finally after 1.5 years since someone gave me the printer, i can print !!! (maybe you need to turn off firewalls and virusscan when downloading the driver aswell) Goodluck!

Reply: (edit) I found a weird solution. I will post it on the computing.net forum, but I don't think it is for everyone.
My main complaint was that to replace my Canon LBP-460 with a similar laserjet I had to go back to an HP LJ 5L or 6L. The newer 1100 was too expensive second hand and the current 1200 series is too large a footprint for what I needed in the first place. LJ 5L and 6L's are going for somewhat ridiculous $80-$120 on eBay and non-existent elsewhere on the web and locally. Having torn apart my LBP-460 to install a separation pad kit, I am familiar with its innards. You can download the PDF service manual for the similar HP LJ 5L here - http://www.mydocsonline.com/pub/bcarter27/lj5l.pdf I noticed that the PC Formatter board is the only major difference between the 5L, 6L, and the 460. So, if you swap that with a board from a 5L or 6l, then the HP drivers will work. I used a board from a 5L that I found on eBay for $16 (Hewlett Packard Laserjet 5L Formatter PCB(logic board) Part #C3942-67902). I have not tried the 6L board, but, in theory, it should work too. The 5L board also has the memory expansion slot. So, I can upgrade from 1MB to 9MB. The 5L board has a connector that would normally go to the front panel test button and LED's, but it doesn't seem to bother the printer that there is nothing connected to it. Win2000 did not detect the printer through Plug n Play as I hoped. Just setup your printer port as ECP in your BIOS, then load the HP LJ 5L driver that came with Win2000 manually. As I said, this isn't for everyone, but this whole thing pissed me off. (Cheap) revenge is sweet. Brandon

Reply: (edit)Same with me. What's with this planned obsolescence? We should be building systems that last instead of throwing perfectly functional machines (old friends) out because two major corporations didn't develop the driver. I will not buy a Canon printer next time.

Reply: (edit)As a professional field support engineer travelling the length and breadth of the UK i thought i had the ability to find almost any driver via one source or another, after extensive searching i have found that Canon have committed the perfect crime and got away with it too.... Ripping people off and not providing them with the updates that all other manufacturers provide. Well that solved one problem atleast, i am now and will always in the future notify any of my clients that to purchase anything from canon is going to be a potential headache when the y require support.

Reply: (edit)Well, my Canon LBP460 is just sitting on my workshelf collecting dust instead of putting out required prints. I was forced to go out and buy an Epson (at least it works on XP and Epson support tops Canon's any day). What kills me is that it would take Canon techs a small time investment to code a simple driver instead of putting hundreds or thousands of customers off. Why would any of us by a Canon again? Is this worth losing thousands of customers Canon? Don't blame Microsoft- if you sell a Windows OS hardware/software product, you need to keep up with the times and keep your product up to date. If you can't then DON'T SELL WINDOWS PRODUCTS!

Reply: (edit)I am having the same problem as everyone else. I have W2K and XP. I never thought of checking compatability before upgrading to W2k or purchasing a new laptop with XP installed. I guess I should have bought that old 75MHz PI computer with 64MB RAM at the yard sale the other day for $15.... Then I might be able to give this printer away. I am glad to find I am not the only one refusing to purchase another Canon product because they say I should. Add me to that list you are forwarding to the Attorney General. Thanks!
