Hello All,
I was originally running a 1Ghz p3 with 512 megs
of pc133 ram, and my system ran perfectly, but
the filter caps next to the power connector on my motherboard shorted and that fried my old
motherboard (ms-6337 msi brand), I tried to locate a exact replacement but no stores in my
area sells p3 hardware anymore, so I was forced to upgrade to my current p4 system. But
after I transferred all my stuff into the new case and turned on my system, it loads everything in up to the point just before where the windows 98 gui starts up, and then the system stops and displays a message:

your program has caused a divide overflow error in vmm32.vxd, press any key to continue.

After I hit a key, the system shuts off or resets. I have already tried the following:

booting into safe mode (that still works) and
disabling some of the normal mode stuff.

re-install windows 98

blank the entire drive and try windows 98 se,
it worked a little better, but it exhibited the exact same problem after installing my nvidia geforce 4 drivers (I tried older versions all the way up to latest versions)

un-install the nvidia drivers in my original installation and force 640x480 16 color mode.

the se error mentioned above suggests a problem with my nvidia drivers, but un-installing them didn't seem to help.

rebuilt my vmm32.vxd file (between this and
a operating system re-install, I should have corrected any corruption in the operating system.

Tried un-installing 1 driver at a time and seeing if it would come up in normal mode like that, no luck.

I don't get it, my original installation worked perfectly on my p3 bd (815e chipset)
but won't come up in normal mode on my p4 (845 chipset). - msi 6580

I considered it might be a timing problem (faster processor and bus) causing a timing loop in windows 98 to fail, but a check on
microsoft's tech site stated that the problem
was corrected after windows 95.

Please respond to my email only because I have
my new system 'sort of' working at the moment
(temporary xp install) and a lot of my programs don't run properly or at all under xp, and it is a bit unstable.

Also, I am aware of the gmax/genus scanner driver (.386 files) problem causing this sort of situation, I have never installed either of
these drivers on my system (no scanner attached).

Thanks!
