(This is a reply to

but the message system won't let me reply to this message, because it is to old. That why I'm posting it as a new subject. I think it is worth it.)Hi!
I have a GeForce 2 GTS. I used to have an error with DirectX in DXDiag: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device) (out of memory). In the Display tab 'DirectDraw Acceleration' and 'AGP Texture Acceleration' were not available and the buttons next to them were disabled!
I got the error after I installed DirectX 8.1, which was a requirement for the new driver for my TV card (PCTV Rave). After I installed both, the image and sound of my TV card were not in sync. The diagnostic tool that came with the driver of the TV card said there was a problem with DirectX.
So I started DXDiag, were I saw the problem mentioned before. Reinstalling DirectX didn't help. Then I looked around on the Internet for a solution. As was suggested somewhere, I tried to disable Direct3D acceleration, quit DXDiag and enable it again. But when I started DXDiag again, the button to enable Direct3D acceleration was disabled and it said that Direct3D acceleration was not available (just like DirectDraw and AGP texture accelaration weren't available, as I mentioned above)!!! Now I was in deep s---!!! >:(
So I looked further on the Internet and I found the following page:
www.andrew.cmu.edu/~twm/stuff/directdraw.html
This page offered the wierdest solution to a problem I ever encountered. It suggested the following:
- start NetMeeting (!!!)
- in the options menu, select remote desktop sharing
- follow the wizard through, as if you are installing it
- after it's started, go to the same option and disable remote desktop sharingAfter this, DXDiag now showed all acceleration buttons being enabled!!! I only had to enable Direct3D acceleration, because I had disabled it before. I could now also use the 'Test Direct3D' button and it worked!!! :-D
Not only did it fix this problem, it also fixed a problem which I thought wasn't connected to DirectX (I will explain it here shortly, though it is a bit of topic). Since a few months (and now I guess it started when I installed DirectX 8.0) my Divx movies played with a very bad frame rate in full screen mode, one frame per second or so.
Also, normal mpeg movies wouldn't scale any more: so when I selected zoom 200% or full screen, it still showed as 100%. I tried to solve these problems using different movie players and new drivers. And after a while I had given up the idea to find a solution. But now I fixed the DirectX problem, these problems have also dissappeared!!!
So I am a very happy man now! :-)))
I hope this will help other people. Good luck!

I have a same kind of problem with my display card. I installed DirectX 8.1 and now my direct3D test can't do DirectX test's D3D part. My D3D version is 7 but other files are version 8. Any suggestion? Could your 'fix' work with Win98 also? Why NetMeeting must be on?

hmm. i have the exact same problem... ie, the Test Direct3d gives me the same HRESULT, but unfortunately this solve didn't fix my problem. this led me to believe that maybe it was terminal services causing problems... so i uninstalled, but still same problem.
Darn. back to square 1.

Actually, i take that back.
win2k srvr Term Services definitely was causing the problem.
I found this info at http://club.aopen.com.tw/forum/viewmessage.asp?forumID=27&MessageID=7565
Apparently any sort of remote control software can cause this program, including Microsoft's own Terminal Services. It seems ironic that Microsoft will create software that nullifies other software the create & supply. As an MCSE, i have never seen this problem before - learn something every day. 'Thanks a lot microsoft'.
Cheers.

hmm... i tried this and it didnt work. If i am doing it wrong, PLZ HELP ME! After i started netmeeting, ran the remote desktop sharing, then disabled it, my problem was not fixed. Please tell me what i did wrong... i would greatly appreciate it!

thanks a lot man, i had the same probleme and it s ok now: i can play DVD and DIVx with a good framerate!
Anyway it s the fool solution i have ever seen!!
(sorry about my english i am french)

I have win2k adv server down here with term services installed. I got this HRESULT right after upgrading to dx8.1d. Did the above steps, and even tho still cant believe it, it worked! It has absolutely NOTHING to do with term services. Good luck and thank you all!

Thanks a lot for the posting!!!!!!!
I've spent over 10 hours messing around with every possible option, drivers, directx versions, etc.
I didn't think it was something so simple, who would have known.
DVD's and direct3d games back again.
Thanks again.

Had a problem with Command & Conquer Red Alert2 (black menu screens while game was running) that just started happening after months with no problems. I used Dx Diag and also saw the Direct3d was not available... used your solution and it solved the problem!
I had recently used Netmeeting to RC another PC, so running it in remote desktop mode must have caused the problems. I was uninstalling and reinstalling everything I could think of before I found this thread. Thanks a lot!!
JDC
