Here is the information I've found on your question:

Some things I found:
http://www.epinions.com/cmd-review-3EB5-B7125AF-387E6B3C-bd1

installed AOL on the computer: it didn't work. What?!? No answer from the remote computer? This can't be. I tried 2 more times but no luck. Ok, no need to panic, it's a new computer of course? It's bound to work right? I transferred my own internet account to the computer then I fired up my own internet connection: still no can do. Shoot. I spent the next 4 hours troubleshooting the connection and doing research on the Conexant/Rockwell Soft56k modem included in the 6535. What I read shocked me: it was essentially a piece of crap. I was stuck here with a $599 computer without a working modem! Good lord, I called HP demanding an explanation but the tech support people just blew me off. And that was after 30 minutes on hold. My next step was to purchase a new modem for the computer. I decided to replace the Conexant modem the more reliable Lucent LT Winmodems. Mission: successful.

And another:

The modem and soundcard are an integrated card, meaning they are one and the same. If one goes out, you've got to replace the whole thing. Also, good luck finding drivers for this particular Rockwell/Conexant modem/soundcard combo (and if you do, please email them to me, I could use them the next time I want to play with this thing).

A possibility!!!!

Another possibility!!!

Another negative:
http://thetechnozone.com/pcbuyersguide/hardware/systems/HP_Pavilion_9692C.html

At the time of publication, we hadn't yet heard official word from Conexant, but it appears that the sound component of the card isn't DirectX compliant. Conexant (Rockwell) supports the Aureal standard v1.0, but there is no mention of DirectX support on its site for any of the devices or drivers. DirectX v8.0, we hear, is supposed to incorporate the Aureal v1.0 standard, but it is never wise to rely on unreleased product developments -- and not only for the reason that DirectX 8 is still several months away from release.

Moreover, if you are intent on adding a different sound card, you are likely to be most successful by disabling only the RipTide PCI Audio Legacy Resources in Windows Device Manager. When you disable the Master Riptide PCI Audio Device, then the modem stops working. This is complicated by the fact that the Pavilion includes no documentation specific to the RipTide card.

The Riptide card, it is worth repeating, is not Linux compatible, and Windows 2000 doesn't, by default, recognize the component at all. Apparently, HP has no intention of writing a Windows 2000 driver, either, as it apparently feels that the Pavilion series of PCs is intended for home users running Windows 98, not those running a "business OS" such as Windows 2000. (Although generic Windows 2000 drivers are not available as of this writing, you might want to check http://www.conexant.com/playground/waveartist/downloads/ for future updates.) Officially, HP has stated that it will not support the Pavilion series under Windows 2000.

Again, there are possible, albeit unsupported solutions to this issue. Some intrepid users have reportedly found that the the modem can be successfully configured under that OS as an LT WinModem and the soundcard set as a ESS 1370. In this case, you will have to use the (supplied) NT4 audio drivers and, again, disclaimers apply: if you are likely to be running Windows NT, Windows 2000 or Linux in the near future, the Pavilion 9692 isn't an ideal choice.

In Jan. 2000, Konstantin Lazarev, a programmer at Conexant Systems, Inc. wrote, "Now I'm finishing debugging of Linux driver for the Rockwell (Conexant) RipTide Audio Card (that is installed in HP Pavillion) and the Conexant ICH Audio Card. The driver is designed as loadable module and replaces standard OSS driver when it is being installed. I hope that beta version of the driver will be available in February.

Some Win9x programs, too, didn't seem to like the RipTide card. When Cakewalk 7, for example, attempted to analyze the sound card, the whole system froze and needed to be turned off and restarted. At times like this, the unit's lack of a reset button was a glaring absence.

If this whole modem/sound card issue troubles you, let us reiterate that the solution is quite simple -- and can be had for less than $100. If the Conexant card doesn't suffice for your needs (and it probably will), just purchase a decent V.90 compatible speakerphone modem and a new sound card. A modem can be had for about $29 these days.

Just for one more additional comment, there are in fact GENERIC drivers available that I have found in several areas that allow the modem to work, but I'm still unable to get sound to work on 98SE.
