I have ran into the same problem. Im running a Compaq Presario 1200XL-118 notebook with a Lucent PCI DF Modem with driver 5.0.0.2. It worked fine under WinXP for about a week and then it just quit and I started receiving Error 692 and the modem will not work at all. I have search high and low, called Compaq (which was a huge waste of time..the answer was "we dont support it because it's to old (its only a year old). Talked with Microsoft Tech Support (who was actually very helpfull..hard to belive) however...no one can seem to find a driver! If you come up with a driver...please email a link to

Same problem with presario 1266. MS says that xp is on win2000 base so an upgraded driver meant for win2000 should work but I can't find that either...good luck.

I also have the same problem with a Presario 1255, I tried to download some drivers, but it doesnŽt want to work, Windows XP tells me that the device doesnŽt assign resources. I gave them manually but was a waste of time.
If someone knows some place to download a new driver, IŽll be thankfull.

Compaq Presario 56K-DF (modem) "Properties"

"This device is disabled because the firmware of the device did not give it the required resources (Code 29)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device."

Suggestions followed - no luck.

I'd sure like to hear from anyone who knows how to get the modem working with XP.

Compaq recommends getting another modem.

Try choosing Connexant 56K PCI Modem for any Win OS. Good Luck.
I have Compaq Presario 1600XL145 and Win2000 and it worked. (Almost give up after cursing profoundly at Compaq).

I have a Compaq Presario Modem 56K. It gives me the message that there is no dial tone, but the phone line works and is plugged into the back of the tower correctly. Does anyone know what is wrong?

I have W2k drivers for my Presario 1200XL-106 that have been working perfectly for over a year. In fact, I am using the machine to write this to you now. You do HAVE to disable the dos sound functions in the bios (since W2k does not support dos, of course). Anyone who wants the drivers can e-mail me and I will send them to you. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. I had no problems, but I have maxed out the memory on the machine. I have the video, sound and modem drivers all in one zipped package.

Compaq and the one-eyed Wonder Worm!! I can't understand how this company stays in business. I was given a Presario 2240 and when I tried to bring it into the Year 2K it went all flaky on me!! Compaq sucks! My Dell gave me some trouble but they sent a tech out to my house the next day to fix the problem, Dell Rules!! And the best part is, you can upgrade a Dell so your dollars will go further. I don't even care to get the modem working with Win 2000. I think I'm just going to toss this hunk of junk off of the roof (after I pull the JBL speakers out of it, the only thing worth saving). Oh and by the way,,, the only reason this crappy system was given to me was because the HD went! DOUBLE TURDS!!

ive used compaq's most of my life and up until just recent they were good computers. now that operating systems come out as fast as the computer compaq needs to get there heads out of their butts and be prepared; no merger will help them with thier own hardware incompatiblies

Had the same modem problem after upgrade to w2k.. spent hours before finding the reason and tried to reinstall w98 from the compac disk. Have two partitions so I chose the "fast format" option so it wouldn't erase my "valuable" partition.. Now I have one partition full of compac crap. Apparently compaq have found a way to combine and erase partitions with a fast format...

I have been looking for a driver about a year now for Windows 2000 - then XP. I ended up purchasing a PCMCIA Modem. Still would like to get this modem working. (maybe impossible) Compaq is not good. Never buy again.

The drivers on this web page http://members.cnx.net/reboot/modems/ make the modem in a Presario 1200 work with Windows 2000.
