Hello all of you tech wizzies, I am having an issue I can't seem to get around.
Both my CD-RW drive (OPORITE CD-RW CW4802) and DVD ROM drive (HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8160B) ARE detected in the BIOS on either of the two IDE cables. I even tried changing the jumpers to Master/Slave and to Cable Select on each... all ended in the same result.WinXP Home sees both drives in the Device Manager, but both drives have the yellow dot with the exclamation point in it. The message I get from both drive properties is...
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"
I have checked all of the sites that I know of, even the manufacturer's crappy/nonexistant sites and came away with even more frustration. I have unistalled each disk and put them into another Computer which happens to be running WinXP Pro and they are both auto-installed and work just fine. For some reason this computer and the WinXP Home on it hates these drives. The drives DO NOT even register in the "My Computer" window... all I see is the HDD and the floppy drive although both the CD-RW and and DVD ROM drives are detected in the Device manager with driver issues.
How do I first get Windows to accept each drive as just a CD-ROM so I can at least try to put in a disk???? Short of FDISK/Formatting my HDD what can I do to solve this annoying issue? Any help would be appreciated, this one has me boggled and I hope my patience can hold until I find the fix or I just attach this HDD to my other computer and transfer the files I need and format this disk.
Hmm... while writing this I was thinking about getting a floppy disk and making one of those "ultimate boot disks" and see if thsoe CD-ROM drivers are enough to at least get me one drive to access in Windows. Welp, time to go to sleep and work on this issue at a later time.

I went to this site
"http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;314060"I tried to edit the registry, but when I went to delete the entry I kept getting an error "Error Deleting Key: Cannot Delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}"
I can't delete the Registry entry in either Regedit.exe or Regedt32.exe.... all permissions set to Full in the settings.
I am at a loss now, any other suggestions out there?

Welp, I figured it out... you cant delete the registry folder. You just go through and delete the entries inside the folder. I then uninstalled both the CD-RW and DVD ROM from the Device Manager and restarted the computer. When Windows restarted both of the drives were in My Computer... now to find a CD-R and test out the burner.
I found this great site for WinXP issues
