HD crashed & install a new one. Prior to the crash I had install a USB 2 PCI card and successfully connected a CD-RW external drive. Upon loading up all the software on the new HD, CD-RW will not work. Upon going to Devise Manager and double clicking "USB Mass Storage Device" I get the following message: "The NTKERN.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver. (Code2.) I have attempted multiple times to Update the driver, using the CD that came with the USB 2 PCI card, using the floppy from the CD-RW mfg. titled "USB 2.0 Device Driver for Win98 and also by downloading driver from www.siig.com and nothing works. Would appreciate any suggestions as to what I might do next to get the CD-RW drive working. The unit was working fine until the hard drive crashed.
Thanks,
rc

Problem solved due to hints from this forum. First, went to device manager and removed the "USB Mass Storage Device" that had the yellow circle and red exclamation mark. Then I removed the USB 2 PCI card that I had installed prior to the HD crash. Rebooted without the PCI card and shut PC down again. Then re-installed PCI card and instead of using the Add Hardware Wizard, per mfg.'s instructions, inserted CD, went to start, then to run and typed in D:\setup.exe and the CD loaded the files. Rebooted with the CD-RW drive connected to the USB 2 port and the drive was working as normal. After struggling for 2 days with this problem, the first step in the solution was from this forum where someone stated "you may have to remove the PCI card and re-install it". This piece of info. put me on the right track and I appreciate it very much.
I will mention that after making this change I'm now getting some chattering from my a: drive which was not present before. Possibly, removing the USB Mass Storage Devise driver might have caused some other problems. But since the a: drive is working, for now, I'll worry about that later.
