My cd-rw drive is not reading anymore sometimes when I restart the pc the drive is not even found and is not displayed in the My Computer screen. I had this problem before and I called compaq they coudn't fix it so they sent me a new cd-rw drive. But it still happened again and now that I have windows XP they say they can't help me anymore. If anyone had this problem before or knows how to fix it plz help me Thanks a lot

I have the same problem in a new Gateway. They sent me a new cd-rw drive. It worked for a week and then I was back to having it work when it wants. It seems to happen more if I have the computer unplugged. It starts working again when IT wants. I am getting very frusturated with it and they don't seem to have an answer.

I had the same problem with my compaq, 98 operating system sometime last year ... I called compaq and they sent a new driver which also worked fine for a week, then became finiky again. Try double checking that when you reintalled the new drive that everything is connected tightly (it could be a dust buildup that is shorting the connection). Try going into safe mode when the computer boots up to see if the f: driver is read. I don't know exactly what made mine work again, but it's been without problems for at least 8 months ... there is hope!! :-) Have you ever had CDs become stuck during the burning process? That's pretty frustrauting too ...
