CD-ROM is not on the computer

CPU/Ram: 256 Ram

well my problem is that when i try to play any type of cd the cd-rom wont read it so i opne the foleder "my computer" and i relaized that the d: or e: (dont know which one it is) wasnt there anymore. How can i fix this??
(It would be great if anyone can send an answer by email.)
PS. The CD-ROM was there before but it just disappeared. Could it have something to do with a previous problem that i had which was that the cd-rom thing wouldnt open

You need to determine if this is a hardware or software problem. Use a windows bootdisk with cdrom support to test out the cdrom.

Well when i finally did the disk thing it siad that the CD-ROM couldnt be found or that it wasnt installed (one of those 2) Does this mean that i need a new CD-ROM or what?
