CD Rom driver not working

My cd rom driver is not working. I push the load/eject button and nothing happens, except the green light comes on for a few seconds and a small noise, like clicking, is made. The tray will not come out either. There is a cd in there. It's been at least a week now since I was able to last use the cd rom drive. I've tried using the "run" on start menu, but it says to insert a disc. (there is one in there tho) Also, I've checked the drive's properties, and there it says that the drive is working properly. Did it die on me or what?? It is less than 1yr old too. CD ROM drive was mfg aug 2001.

not sure what may be wrong with the player but I have a suggestion : most cd players have a small hole on the front panel near the tray drawer about the size of a pencil lead....you can use a straightened out paper clip to manually open the drawer to remove the cd. just push the paper clip in making sure it is going straight in and with a little force the drawer should push open enough to grab. If the player is clicking you may have a broken gear or rail or the cd drawer may be jammed. hope this helps...keep us posted mike

Thank you for the advice. I now have my cd out. I had to also push the tray back in. I guess it needs to be removed and examined now to see what's wrong on the inside of my D drive. I don't know anyone who could check this out for nothing (can't afford to pay) so is there any plan/instructions step by step that I could use to do it myself?
Unless it's a simple fix, the cost of a new CD-drive is probably gonna be less than repair costs. Maybe it's still covered under warranty? Less than a year old...it should be. Try taking it back to where you bought it.

I'm sure it's covered by a warranty, but I'm better off replacing it. It belongs to my future ex hubby, but I appropriated the whole system from him to replace mine that he destroyed.
