Model/Manufacturer: Compaq Presario

My CD/DVD Driver is a NEC DVD+-RW ND-6500A and my computer will not recognize the driver. It will not even show up in My Computer. I looked it up in my Device Manager and the the Driver Status says

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device"

I, of course, clicked that Troubleshoot button, but was no use, I did whatever it told me, and that did not fix my problem. I uninstalled the driver and had Add New Hardware to reinstall it, and that did not work. What I'm trying to do next is download a new driver for it and reinstall it that way. But I cannot for the life of me find out where I can download that particular driver. If anybody knows a way I can fix this or knows a good hardware driver archive that I might download it from, I'd really appreciate it.

As a rule, Windows supplies its own drivers for optical drives (and has since Win95) - the only drivers to download would be for DOS access when using a boot diskette - nothing really to do with Windows

Does that mean you'd removed its entry from Device Manager, rebooted and let Windows discover & reinstall? If not, worth trying.

Was it ever working?

You might consider scanning Windows for corrupt files with sfc

I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. I simply suspect that if Microsoft ever met up with the devil, it wouldn't need an interpreter

It's worked fine before. I don't know what I did to make it mess up. All of a sudden, when I wanted to look at a CD nothing happened, and there was no CD drive in My Computer. Some time before, I uninstalled something called NewDotNet because Spybot recognized it as spyware. I don't think that had anything to do with it. Yes, I also did remove the entry in Device Manager by right clicking and clicking Uninstall I also rebooted to do the Add New Hardware process. That also didn't work. I was hoping it would. I may have to scan my computer using all sorts of maintaince softwares as a last resort. I still can't find a device driver download that I could use to reinstall it that way.

Nor are you likely to - but keep looking if you want

NewDot etc is undesirable, and occasionally there are consequences if it's improperly removed, but that's typically a loss of internet connectivity - it's doubtful if there's any relation to your drive problem

As a rule you can get drivers for just about anything at "windrivers.com". However, I doubt you'll find anything for an NEC DVD there. Those drivers should included in XP. If it's a driver problem it's an XP problem.
However, it could be a mechanical problem with the DVD drive. If the laser lense is dirty, or not aligned due to a good jolt it won't work. Check the easy stuff first. Clean the laser lense with a Qtip and alcohol. Go to "MajorGeeks.com" where you will find a program to check the internal electronics of your drive.

I'm fairly certain no driver was installed (beyond Windows' native driver) when the device was initially working - that is the main reason when there are no drivers available for download, they're just not required. It's just.... goofy to think one is necessary now.

If you search, all you will find are firmware updates, which are not 'drivers'

... I guess repetition is the key??

Doesn't seem like a mechanical or electronic problem, based on the warning details - kind of the whole point of having them is to render an idea of where the problem lies, in order to avoid random guessing

I recently had the same problem with my Windows XP Pro x64 Installation. All three of my drives (ATAPI CD-R/RW, LiteOn DVD ROM, LiteOn DVD RAM/+-RW DL/...) stopped showing up in Windows. I used system-restore to roll-back changes nearly a week, and still nothing worked. The drives worked fine, I was actually able to attempt a Windows repair from the CD (sfc doesn't work, because it wants to copy files from the install CD, which it can't see).

The re-pair worked ok (recopied files from the CD), but when it rebooted to finish the repair, it still couldn't find the drives, so it was dead (it wouldn't boot). I re-installed windows, went through all the patching, and installed most of my programs, and everything seemed fine. I installed MS Office 2003 yesterday, and today when I restarted my machine, it couldn't find the drives again. I had MS Office installed before for weeks, so I don't think it was Office in particular. All I know is, when I uninstalled Office, all my games, and Divx (which I had recently upgraded on both Windows installs), and rebooted, my CD drives came back up. Roll-back didn't work, but Un-installing did. I would try uninstalling anything you recently installed or upgraded, to see what might have conflicted.
