I have 2 hard drives. I have data on my c drive, and 2 windows directories (win and win1) I had to reinsatll windows due to a major problem I had. I formatted my D drive with system files and copied all of my C drive except for the windows dir to the D drive. I then copied the newer files from both of the win directories to my D drive. When I boot up I get "can't find himem.sys in windows dir, yet it is there. Any advice??
I hate to load win from scratch, I am not sure I have all of my drivers. It works if I boot from the A drive to dos and then run win on my D drive.

I find it more likely that the path for himem.sys defined in the io.sys ain't matching that of the real file.
Try making your own 'default' config.sys where YOU define where the f--- the himem.sys file is.

(simple config.sys file:)
dos=high,umb
device=d:\windows\himem.sys /testmem:off
device=d:\windows\emm386.exe noems i=b000-b7ff

Add display.sys and other custom stuff.
