cannot burn on cd

I have been trying to burn a cd of anything and can't. I can put a cd of music or anything else and it will play. I try to burn a music cd and it will burn the whole thing , but after it is done i will put the cd back into computer and cd will be empty. I try to burn photos, and it will say it is formatting and never do anything else. I have tried a number of things with no luck, so if someone could help me with this I would very much appreciate it.
