Reply: (edit)Hi C.Y. I also have a Aureal Vortex2 8830 soundcard and WinXP Pro EN installs the driver from itself. But anyway, I'm also looking for a driver because I have only sound on Output1. To get sound from Output2, the right driver must be installed. I will search further and will inform you if I found something and if you found something in mean time, would you mail me? But can you mail me anyway because I don't have your emailaddress? Regards, Yubo

Reply: (edit)I,too, have an Aureal Vortex2 8830 sound card. Microsoft has a compatability test that is online and tells you what software you have on your current machine that will not work with Windows XP (unfortuatnely, I've lost the URL for the page that has that test, but I think that you can lookm it up at either the PC World or CNET Web site). That test says that this card does not support Windows XP and recommends taht you contact your software vendor to obtain an update. It also says that if you don't update the card before you upgrade to XP, then the card will not work after the XP upgrade is complete. (For me, things get even better, because the test says the same thing about my video driver, so I won't be able to see or hear anything if I upgrade. Also, my "software endor" is the computer company-Cybermax-that sold me my computer, and it is now out of business.)

Reply: (edit)Ditto...I have the same card and just installed XP...wish i knew then what I know now. I actually get the boot-up music and about a minute of a song before the sound goes out. Has anyone tried the driver for Win2000 from the address below? http://www.vortexofsound.com/drivers/drv_v2wdm.htm I am thinking about giving it a try. Has anyone found any other solutions other than buying a new sound cardI I J ? The only other driver I found was on cnet, but it is for 98.

Reply: (edit)I have tried the win2k MS certified drivers from vortex of sound with no luck... I have also tried my vortex superquad digital with different configurations of systems (AMD Athlon, AMD Thunderbird and Intel Celeron) with no luck. I have noticed however that reducing hardware acceleration in the audio control panel does keep the sound on for longer. The win9x drivers will certainly not work on the NT platform of XP. I guess I need a new sound card :-( /V\asters

Reply: (edit)The vortex problem with winxp is an issue Microsoft is actually putting their own money into. They say they are making vortex drivers themselves for XP just to satisfy their customers. So, there's hope yet for functional drivers. Until then, there is a fix, although it's a major pain in the but. Here's the link, I'd suggest following their instructions perfectly, because I'm sure the process could cause a person a major headache if it wasn't done right. http://www.vortexofsound.com/techhelp/th-v2a80.htm It seems to work so far on my card (Diamond MX300) and a friends. Hope it works for ya.

Reply: (edit)this did work for me (XP Pro, retail) but it's not perfect. i've noticed some problems now with popping on some mp3s and a decrease in volume and quality for DVD playback. overall, it should be enough until (hopefully) official WINxp drivers are added.

Going into Safe mode and disabling the soundcard helps but it's not the solution anyway :). Well, has anybody tried the fix http://www.vortexofsound.com/techhelp/th-v2a80.htm on Vortex 1 card?

Reply: (edit)I recently installed XP after running 98 for a long time. At first I didn't have any problems with the stock sound drivers that were installed - but I hadn't tried playing any games yet. When I did try playing Tribes 2, the sound cut out on me all of the sudden and then it wouldn't come back without restarting. I found this message thread and tried both the Win2K drivers and the BIOS editing. The Win2K drivers didn't help me much: The sound still cut out when I entered the game. The BIOS edit, however, did the trick and it was really rather easy. Just follow the directions. Quicksilver: I don't have surround speakers set up so I can't comment on those. But from the other messages that I have read in this thread, I would say that it doesn't work. Thanks go out to those that pointed out the Win2K drivers and the BIOS fixes! Justin

Reply: (edit)That fix @ Vortex of Sound worked fine for me. I did get some pops and clicks while listening to MP3's in Winamp, but I think I found a fix to that. Make sure you have Winamp 2.77 or newer. Look under Preferences>Plug-Ins>Output and select "Nullsoft DirectSound plug-in v2.0." This used to give me probs under Win98SE, but it works great now. The volume is a bit lower than with the default, but I haven't gotten a single click or pop yet. Good luck!!

Reply: (edit)Well,im just gonna wait till ms sort out some nice workin drivers, life aint to bad for me without messin too much with em, congrats on ms for actually trying to support hardware thats is in effect dead! for those of u having problems with the volume being very low with xp try this simple little trick.... 1.open vol control 2.goto options menu 3.goto proporties 4.select extra (or whatever, not recording or playback, but the other one) the last slider should be for fading volume from front to back,as standard its set to 25%forward and 75%back so just whack it bang in the middle and u should notice things get a little louder! as for the multiple speaker output, mine works fine with the xp drivers but i dont use a quad setup ,just headphones in the rear plug and speakers for the front,my problem is cubase vst32 wont let me use the asio driver anymore (the one that comes with cubase i mean) i have been tempted to go back to 9x but then i realised that my monitor was starting to burn in with a nasty blue screen :) anyways guys hope we all find a nice soloution soon! peace.

Applying this PCI latency patch resolved the issue completely, and should work with other motherboards that use the 686B southbridge chip as well. http://www.viahardware.com/download/george/vlatency_v014.zip I hope this helps, and many thanks to George Breese for writing this patch!

Reply: (edit)I have the Aureal Vortex 8810. I thought I'd mention this specifically, since the 8830 is discussed almost exclusively here. I had the problem discussed in this thread: I would hear just the beginning of the startup WAV when XP booted up. I tried the Via hardware link solution provided by Kap, but it no work for me. Then I tried the link provided by Tom (another Tom) above. http://www.chandler-bing.ic24.net/vortexfix.htm. THIS WORKED, AND WORKED GREAT. So, the major points to be made are 1) This problem apparently applies to the 8810 as well as the 8830, and 2) The above chandler link worked for me, and solves the problem for the 8810. Thanks to all who posted before me. Problem solved!!

Reply: (edit)Ok guys, I just got my rear channel working, I did a bunch of stuff, but I suspect it was just the last thing I did that fixed it. 1. I first told windows to update the driver through the control panel, and the driver version for Aureal Vortex 8830 now is 5.1.2601.0 2. I followed the instructions here (did that a few months ago and this stopped the audio dropping) http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/chris.day/vortexfix01.html 3. I downloaded the Vortex Control Panel XP from http://aureal.cjb.net (its on the download page) I also needed to get some ActiveX controls to get this to work (TABCTL32.ocx) which is part Microsoft's Visual Basic 6.0 SP5 support files 4. I downloaded Alex Mina's AC97 Mixer from http://www.upsystems.com.ua/support/alexmina/ 5. Under the A3d Tab in the Vortex COntrol Panel XP I set it to quad speakers (this didnt do anything but I am not sure if it is needed) I believe it asked me to reboot here 6. Opened the AC97 Mixer (I was only able to open this directly with the exe not the link in the Vortex Control Panel XP) 7. Opened the Codec menu then click on Model Specific... 8. Changed the radio button to 2 channels -> 4 speakers (the rear channel immediatley started playing the mp3 I had going) 9. Closed the mixer and was done hope this helps (i still have not tested IL-2 again)

Reply: (edit)Big thanks to Viper....After a lot of trial and error I managed to solve the dropout prob with XP/SonicVortex2 soundcard by using Chandler's fix, and just when I thought I had it cracked, and settled down to watch my fave dvd, I noticed my rear surround speakers weren't working!! I was about to open window and throw computer out when I decided to surf again to find an answer and I came upon this page....if only I done it earlier!! Viper's comments with regard to getting the AC97 mixer (see response 42 for details folks) was the only remaining thing I had to do and it solved the problem immediately for me. OK, basically all I had to do to get my Vortex 2 to work with XP was 1. Download the 2000 drivers from Vortex of sound website. 2. Follow the instructions included with regard to getting rid of XP drivers, and loading the new ones. 3. Follow Vipers instructions on the AC97 thingy. SIMPLE! Thanks ALL, its now 3AM and I'm gonna go zzzzz's.

Reply: (edit)If only I'd found this page earlier. The sound dropoff problem was getting really bad for me, as well as the lack of a rear channel, and the low volume. This thread has solved all those problems. It's nice to know I'm not alone with these problems, and people more knowledgeable than me have found a way to fix them. Thanks again!

Reply: (edit)I am using XP on a Duron 1000, 133. With a Vortex 8810 sound card. Had the same problem, did the thing from Chandler's site and it works (the other manip did not work, the one not using Wpcedit, just wpcset ). I still get sound from only 1 output, not the 2nd one, nor the CD headset plug. But at least 1 is working. Please get in touch if you have an idea to get the whole sound working. JP

Reply: (edit)Hello, I have been trying to follow the steps in post 42. When I get to step 7, Go To Model Specific. I do and I get the message "No model specific controls known for this codec." This I presume is not allowing me to change it from 2 to 4 which I can't seem to find. I have an 8810. Does this fix not work for this model or am I doing something wrong. Any ideas? Thanks.

Reply: (edit)DJ, I have an MX300 and a DB50XG too, for some bizarre reason the "video" slider actually controls the mpu401 external midi. It's not added among the audio sliders by default so you have to go in and select it, also it's REALLY loud so make sure you set it low and work your way up.

Reply: (edit)Motoki thank you! I'll trie that :)) I don,t know why people at the Diamond doesn't write MX300 drivers for Xp, well is their duty to support product for some years, well I don,t know, is there so hard to change a program code a little to work with Xp?!, well they written it for 98/Me and 2000 ... Because, even if Microsoft writes some useful drivers they will never be as good as original soundcard drivers, and there will never be the original control panel! We must trie at the Diamond or at the firm of your sound card, because I think that MX300 is very damn good card!...

Reply: (edit)First, thanks to all the people that collaborated to this page, especially viper (response 42) I have a Aureal Vortex 8830 Audio and I have the 5.1.2535.0 driver version. I didn't manage to get the new 5.1.2601.0 which viper talks about because even when deleting my driver (see cesar's message) Microsoft didn't give me an update (I don't understand why). I write this respond in order to say that even with an old driver version, viper's tricks (from 2 to 9) work. Regards. Vcyril.
