Audio problem with Avance AC97 & XP

OK, I got this computer a few years ago, and have been having sound problems since the get-go. I have tried using several different speakers and headphones, and have ruled out them as the culprit.
The problem is that the sound is "tinny". It rings around, and it makes voices sound an octave higher than they should.

System Stats:
Windows XP Home
HP Pavilion 513n with an Intel Celeron processor
For Sound:
Avance AC97 Audio
Driver Version: 5.10.0.3930
There are no hardware conflicts.

Please help, as this problem is annoying as hell
