Thans you i need help...

Hi
Glad to help. Looking at what you have briefly decribed its sounds there is a bit more going on. Is this message on a blank black screen. Do you see the windows logo before you get this message. Possibly the message is within a box
I am not sure why it mentions the dos audio driver. What happens if you start in safe mode? Does the system get as far as displaying the message and then hang. Is there a dos prompt anywhere about e.g. c:\>
please describe any thing else which you think is relevant.
Hopefully, your response will have some clues to indicate where the problem lies.
Do you know if this computer had a recovery cd or similar that had drivers on it.
**** About finding a driver from the net.
If you need a audio driver finding one should be not too much of a problem once the make and model of your computer is known. Hopefully when you post this info back, someone can go to a support site and locate the correct audio driver download.
If the sound card has been added in to an existing system or the computer is built up - (like an Ipex system), could you please provide the make and model of the sound card. (that will be the one with the sound jacks in the back of the card.)

Hi,anenefan sorry I could not get back sooner and will not be able to answer your questions now except that windows will not open and when I tryed to start it from the CD it told me the system was already installed and would not let me get any further. I will speak to tina in the morning and get all the info and be back about 10pm Australian EST thank you very much, lbatch

Hi
You're up late.
You may want a boot disk (or just a floppy that has been sys) This will enable you to boot from the floppy and have a look around the hard drive in dos mode.
I was curious what happens when you boot from the hard drive.
Yes I'm on EST time too, up near the Whitsunday region (Too busy and its too dry to enjoy it though) I'll check in tomorrow sometime. From Thursday I'll be away from the computer for a few days. (hopefully I can get on line Friday night but no promises there.)

Hi I'm always up late I tried to be early tonight and typed all this out offline then stupid me submitted it so here goes again, you probably wont need most of it. When first turned on, IBM TIT. 98 Starting MS Dos, It then runs though the mouse ect: until it comes to the message I posted (except it was 96 not 95) Plus,All rights reserved can not find Ess Pci Audio Adapter microsoft (R) windows 98(c)copy right microsoft corp.1981 1998. Then if she said it right it has got a prompt it's C:\windows> Thats where it stops. The info on the outside of the computer is as follows,APITVA IBM.(the monitor I think)Compaq modal E3Q.on the front it has, Windows 98 pre installed.Lotus Smartsuipe including,Word processer for word processing.Lotus 123 Speed sheets.Free lance graphics presentation & more. ATI RAGE PRO TURBO 2x AGP Graphics with cristal clear 3d sound.Popular web browsers pro ins.net scap navigator&internet explorer.Pc Doct&Norton anti virus(oem)version.IBM up date conector.IBM service & support. Then on the back most of it's "double dutch" to me but here I go, AMD-K6-2\300 Processor with 3D now!tecnology 48MB Sinc DRAM\256MB maximum. 4GB square hard drive. 32xmax-14xmin.CD rom.512KB L2 Pipline Burst cache.56K(v90compatable)Data fax modem.2 universal serial bus ports. As I said all double dutch to me,I do know about the RAGE PRO TURBO because my computer reinstalled every thing on it except this, for the second time this morning I've only had it back a week and I'll have to take it in again, "*#!**#!COMPUTERS" Thank-you again for any help you can give.

Hi
Thanks for that. An IBM aptiva
I have to be quick:
Drvers fro the onboard (I lelieve its onboard according to a few pages I've read)
Drivers at IBM as suggested by the poster at Sound-card drivers.
Try to use safe mode starting up. This will bypass some stuff, but you should be able to get windows up where you can go to the device manager and see if there are any yellow marks against drivers.
If it won't and ends back at the dos prompt:
I'm not really sure what is going on. You say the machine has redone most of them again this morning?
If you can use dos, look at the autoexec.bat config.sys files. (some window versions use them some don't)if you are stuck at >windows type
cd ..
to look at msdos.sys type including "type"
type msdos.sys |more
are there any odd characters in the msdos file.
Microsoft linkOK like to think about this a bit more but very pressed for time.

Hi again, Would you believe it I just typed all this out but forgot to login first so lost it and have to start over. Thank-you again for all your help,we will try what you said, but I don't think it would let us start it in safe mode, I'll tell her to try and let you know how we go. Sorry I did not make myself clear about the one reloading for the second time, that was my computer not (Tina's) the one we are having this trouble with and I don't know why it did it, but I've fixed it again. Also I'm sorry I can not log on any earlier, but I have to keep the phone line open.Once again thanx I'll let you know how we go Regards lbatch

We are still having touble WE can not start in safe mode unless there is a prompt we don't know? After the prompt we typed in "cd" then "type msdos.sys" and this came up "following lines are required for compatability with other programes do not remove them (msdos.sys needs to be > 1024 bytes) ;a xxxxx ;b xxxx ;c xxxx ( this goes on to ;s xxx) the x's go across the page.
We could not find the slash before the more and did not know what was ment by more so tried everything we could think of but got no further. Please what are we doing wrong ?????Thans you i need help...

Hi
The | (it is above the backwards slash near the enter key) The purpose of the |more was so you could see contents a page at a time. (bit the same same as /p switch eg dir /p)
Anyhow from what you have described, it sounds like the 98 version of msdos.sys -- which is good.
OK .... About starting in safe mode. During booting you hit the F8 key. Just tap it every second or so after starting (just after the first bios screen flicks off ) and you should end up with the menu.
Out of curiosity do you briefly see the windows screen before it goes to the dos prompt?
Anyhow see if you can get into safe mode.

I could be wrong but it justs sounds like it is starting in DOS mode and it is not properly configured to load the sound device in DOS (like mine).
At the C:\>Windows prompt type
cd\
hit enter
then type
win
hit enter
or
windows
or
exit
or
Ctrl+Alt+Delete
to get into Windows.HTH
Bryan

Yeah the error message is indicating it's attempting to load a dos configuration for a sound card that it can't find. That's not the cause of the problem.
Concerning msdos.sys, it seems to be the correct version as anenefan notes but it could contain a line that's forcing it to boot to dos.
From the dos prompt type:
more c:\msdos.sys
and enter. That should show the file one page at a time. Under [Options] there should be a line that reads:
BootGUI=1
If it actually reads:
BootGUI=0
then that's the problem. To change it, at the dos prompt type:
attrib -s -h -r c:\msdos.sys
and enter. Then type:
edit c:\msdos.sys
and enter. The dos edit program should open. Use the arrow keys to postition the cursor to change the '0' to a '1'. Then hit ALT and Enter to open the tool bar to save and exit the EDIT program. Then at the dos prompt type:
attrib +s +h +r c:\msdos.sys
and enter. Then see if it reboots normally.
If it's not the msdos.sys file, it may be easier if you post back contents of the config.sys and autoexec.bat files on the computer--especially if exit or win starts windows as Bryan suggests.

Thank-you . Thank-you .Thank-you ,WE have got into the thing, so are very greatful for all your help. We have a print out of all your help in case we need it and if we have anymore trouble we will call on you all again with confidence,we could not have done it on our own

Hi
Just would like you to clarify something. When you say "got into it" do you mean "safe mode"?
