ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 help?

Okay, so it all started while trying to start up Left 4 dead. I ran into a problem which seemed to affect a lot of people. Upon game-launch it would only be a black screen yet it would still have the audio for the game and the lobby. Originally there were many "fixes" people posted. All of which has lead me here... Initially what I had to do was just update my drivers and mess around with the steam properties, but when I tried updating my ATI card with catalyst, it kept saying that either it wasn't compatable with my hardware/software or that the video card wasn't found or that I needed to set-up my display driver to standard VGA before running the set up. So I ran into a bunch of forums saying something about driver-sweeper or just uninstalling all ATI software before updating because of old and new software conflicting. This just resulted in a big giant mess where I can't install any ATI updates, and I can't find my old installation CD for when I first bought the thing. Any help what-so-ever would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
...Now I know the true meaning of backing up files hahaha.
