ATI All in Wonder in XP?

Comment:

I have an old ATI All in Wonder card and have recently installed Windows XP. Now it seems as though I have nothing but problems with the card. I can't open mpg video in Windows Media Player, when I run DXDiagnostics it tells me that the card doesn't support directdraw even though it was working perfectly when I had Windows 98 installed. If anyone could help me with this problem or direct me to somewhere where I could find a solution, I would be eternally grateful. Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately support for the All-In-Wonder and the All-In-Wonder Pro(which I have) is limited to the display drivers only. The information below is from ATI's website listed below. So far as I am aware, there is nothing available for the tuner and capture features. This is sad. I have enjoyed the use of my card for several years and miss having the extra features.

I have tried the compatibility mode features to no avail. Perhaps you can tweak them to work. If you manage, please let me know. You may also wish to consider using a dual-boot XP/Win98 setup. Maybe with enough requests, ATI will write a new set of drivers. Otherwise it looks like you and I will have to fork out the bucks for the All-In-Wonder Raedon.

The link and info is listed below.

Best Regards;

Gregory

I also have the ATI All-In-Wonder 128 pro. The biggest problem I have is when switching users without logging off of the first user. When I do this, my video is set to 800x600 with 4-bit color. Also, these are the only options in the display settings. I have downloaded the new XP drivers. However, I get a stop error everytime I load them, and have to revert back to the old drivers before windows will start. I don't want to spend the money to replace my card right now, so if you can help please e-mail me.

Hi Dan,

I have the ATI All-in-Wonder-Pro 8MB which was end-of-line 2 years ago. With Windows XP you just use the Rage display drivers that come with XP. If you want to have the TV tuner and some more goodies go to http://support.ati.com/drivers/win2k/win2k_mmc_70wb37_sp.html to download the "Windows 2000 ATI Multimedia Center 7.0 WB37" (http://www.ati.com/na/pages/spdrivers/mmc7wb37.exe). This hefty ~27 MByte is unsupported and given 'as is'. I installed it on Windows XP and it works now, although I experienced slow startup and several crashes of the setup wizard.
On a general note, I have currently a 400 MHz 160 MB PC and find XP quite sluggish and in general not crash-free, Windows 98 worked better for me.
Hope this helps.

Bod

I have both an ATI All In Wonder Pro card and an ATI All IN Wonder radeon card. The drivers and card works fine on my Windows XP AMD 1ghz system, but when I try to install the updated open GL drivers from ATI download center for my windows XP 500 mhz Pentium 3 system, it does not work. I install the drivers, reboot my machine and the screen goes blank upon starting windows xp. I have tried everything I know to do to fix it, but i just cant seem to get it to work. If anyone else has had this problem or knows how to fix it, please help me out and reply. Thanks alot.

I have a ATI All In Wonder 128 and ever since I installed XP, the TV portion won't work. Everything I did, to reinstall the drivers and the MM Center failed. If ATI wants to compete in todays market, they need to write drivers to support thier products in new operating systems. I vote with my dollars. I'll never by another ATI product again. Once you buy their stuff, they leave you out in the cold.

kristin,

To fix the slow frames problem, switch the mode from preview to overlay. To change the channel, you must go to Video Source and click on the TV tuner button. Put the channel you want to turn to into the little field and hit the little "enter" key. You need to open this each time you want to change channels. You could also put a VCR between the cable and your AiW and set it to 3 if you want to be able to switch it more easily. Hope that helps...

Only draw back is the size but at

I have the ATI All-In-Wonder pci 32MB on XP.
No real bad issues as mentioned above. But mine occurs when I try to use TV on demand. This option allows you to pause the tv. But if i click pause, the XP Pro system reboots?
Checked ati and they mention a lot of solutions for the problems above but not mine. For a lot of you guys make sure there is no IRQ conflicts on the slot. This is in device manager and display adapters on the resource tab. Make sure there is a number assinged to the card under IRQ. If so make sure you have the updated drivers from ati. I've seen enough trouble with sound cards and Nics on XP to make MS tech support blush. And nine times out of ten its due to Bad installation of the OS, Video card drivers/software, or device conflict with other hardware.

If none of the above work and you really want to fix any problems try formatting the drive, Remove all hardware except the mouse keyboard, cdrom, floppy and the ATI card in the top PCI slot. re-install XP then all the Hot fixes for XP Then update the drivers for the Vid card (if available). This Will never fail. For all those who can't get a new driver cause your card is two years or older...... GET A NEW CARD. Why bother installing XP with such old hardware anyway!! The XP plus pack needs a 16MB video card to run smoothly. 100 $ now a days is nothing so get a new card.

If anyone knows why I might have this issue please let me know. As I set up the card on a twin system with a fresh install of XP and nothing else and it can pause video with no problems. So I know its some sort of software/driver conflict. Any who has incountered such an issue and resolved it mail me back.

Thanx
JdL

OK, not the cheapest solution, but here's what is working for me under Win2K, probably under XP too but I haven't tried it.

I've got the 8Mb AIW Pro and the "official" ATI driver and player lock up as described above.

The problem seems to be the player (Multimedia Center). With the 5.0.2195.4018 driver, other capture/players seem to work. In particular, I am happily watching TV right now with ShowShifter, which is a Tivo-like VCR tool. They have a 30-day trial version, and the price is reasonable (better than an updated card), about $80 CDN.

I have another problem with the 4018 driver however, it won't let me use my 21" monitor at 1600x1200 res without panning. I have found an IBM OEM driver a little newer (5011), which solves this problem (under Win2K anyway). I know everyone is talking about XP here, but I bet the ShowShifter proggie will solve the XP problem as well, and it's actually better than the real ATI MMC tool.

Fresh install of XP Pro on a Gateway LX motherboard, 384Mb, 500MHz Celeron.

Everything was working except the TV (would lock up) using the ATI XP drivers and Windows Update.

I disabled Write Combining and the TV still locked up.

I fiddled with the Performance Slider (Write Combining still OFF) inside the Display control...and at the far left I received the error "Unable to initalize the TV". I then slid the slider one notch to the right and about half-way over the TV started working!

I'm not sure how stable the system is...I did still lock up once during Channel Autoscan. I may look for a Tweak control panel, either for the ATI or DirectX 8 controls.

Angel, That pretty much means "you have to go and buy an newer video card $60-150 for opengl capabilities.

Everyone else: I have AllinWonder Pro 16mb tv in/out. Sweet a@@ card. I recorded 1hr show directly to my cdburner at 320x240 straight through my vcr. With the antenna in, I can watch 1 channel on TV, record a 2nd channel on my vcr, and watch/record a 3rd channel on my PC, plus it has given me dual monitors so i can work on my second monitor heheheheh sweeeeeet. I format cdrw's and use them directly as slave hard drives. I noticed with the ati drivers that there are multiple when you go to device manager and try to update. Choose show all and find ATI and even ATI enhanced, here i found 4 that would work with this card. Some would run certain games-couldnt record but tv in worked. One plays all my games tv in/out great and only had opengl drivers for quake2. So why cant i play Return to Castle Wolfenstien??? it needs opengl and i can run quake2 in opengl...... WTF???
Win98 has been great, where almost everything is compatible and runs great. WinXP is so everyone has to upgrade there PC's and fill their pockets with dead presidents. Patience is a virtue.
Well hope everyone gets up and running. If you have to go back to Win98 and enjoy your PC !!!
