My girlfriend gave her ancient computer (75mHz)to her computer illiterate mother when her and her husband went to Australia for a year on a work exchange, so they could communicate with each other while she was gone. Being totally ignorant with little help, she eventually got a virus (no up-to date anti-virus software). Another of her daughters decided to reformat to get rid of the virus and did not think to backup any of the drivers. Now almost nothing is working without the correct drivers (foremost the MODEM) and the original hardware documents are nowhere to be found. I deleted the COM1 and COM2 ports and a PCI card from "Unknown Devices" then removed the modem card and rebooted (to reset everything). Shut down again, put in the modem card and rebooted to find that the MODEM was the "unknown" PCI card and Windows 95 automatically detected it and supposedly installed the right drivers for it, yet when not working still, I found that it was set up under COM5, which I'm pretty sure is not right. Unable to change the COM port in either SYSTEM or MODEM properties in control panel, I am not sure what to do next. NOTE: while I had the modem card out of the machine I did look to see if I could find any info; ie: manufacturer, serial/model number and was unsuccessful (looking in the wrong place? There's only so many places to look) My friends husband is pretty sure it's only a 14.4 modem but of that we're not even absolutely sure! After 2 days of just trying to get the right driver for her video card to get that working I told her to buy a new computer!!!!!! I know it's ancient but all she uses it for is email. Is there anyway to tell what speed modem she's got? If we can't find out who the manufacturer of the modem is, are we totally screwed? Is there such a thing as a GENERIC driver that will get this thing up and running? I have gone through some of these forums reading messages posted by others looking for answers and was extremely disappointed by the sarcasm in some of the replies about lack of information (system). Not everyone is an expert, obviously, or we wouldn't be here, there is a starting point for everyone and there is no reason to make people feel like more of an idiot than I'm sure they already feel themselves. If you need more info ask kindly. Thankyou in advance for any help you may have to offer.

Just wondering what make/model number of computer? Was this the original modem that came from the factory ? What do you get when you go to Control Panel and the Diagnostic tab. Then highlight whatever Com that modem is on and hit More Info. See if it recognizes it and sometimes you can get info from there on who makes it.
If you want to e-mail me, take out NOTspam
though I am no expert.

Sorry so long to reply... I am in a differnt city than her and I just found out that she has taken her computer in to a store that will fix it for $70. She has also invested in an Anti-virus software! Thanks anyways for your anticipated help - much appreciated!
