All sound on vista is heavily distorted

Hey guys today i was running my Pc through my USB codec sound card, and unfortunatley my laptop overheated and turned off. Once it had cooled down I got it back on again, except all the sound was horribly distorted. some high pitched sounds were ok but most of the bass is very wrong indeed. I have tried both of my sound cards and some different cables and headphones etc but no difference. I have also tested the speakers which are working perfectly. I tried uninstalling the onbaord drivers and rebooting but no help.
Does anyone have any suggestions please? Im going to have to buy a new computer if the oesnt work out.
