I'm also looking for an xp driver for a 3C509 network card. The 3 com site doesn't even seem to have one for Windows 2000!

I read the following at the 3Com Knowledge Base ( http://knowledgebase.3com.com )

It said something like "Windows XP includes drivers for the 3c509x card, but in order for XP to detect and install your card properly, you actually have to take your network out of your computer and put it back in again.."
well, I did this, but it still doesn't recognize it! I hope they will come with a driver soon, because the drivers they offer (3c509x1.exe) does not include the proper drivers for XP.

By the way, I also found this interesting web page about this card:

Oh, and I did get my network running again under XP.. after I bought some new network cards.. I believe that's the easiest option, and it works perfectly !

If the card is a 3c509b then this is plug and play compatable, but the p&p is usually disabled.

To enable plug and play use the 3com config utility. This will have to be run from DOS. I booted from a W95 start up floppy and then ran the config utilty from the command line.

Once plug and play is enabled then Windows XP automatically detects the card and installs the drivers etc.

Hope this helps.

Concurr with response 8. I had same problem
after installing XP. Booted from 3com
config disk, turned on PnP mode, rebooted
into XP and it discovered the new hardware.
Now the problem is that I'm trying to
multi-boot between W95, WNT4, and XP
(historical operation reasons).
So NT4 won't like the PnP mode, but XP
requires it.

here's a fix that's supposed to work but I don't have an installed copy of win2000 around and can't find all the files required off the CD. If someone has could they please post the 3 files somewhere and message me?

I've got the 3c509B card running under windows XP.
-download the driver packs from 3com (although there the wrong ones)
In this driver pack you'll find a program called 3c5x9cfg.exe.
-You need to create a DOS bootdisk, this may be an old windows startup disk.
-execute the 3c5x9cfg.exe program in dos and change the card settings to PNP (plug n play)
-Windows XP will now recognise the card
-get a file called netel5x9.nfi and put it in the windows\inf directory (hidden dir)
-than try to install driver again and choose the file manualy

Goodluck!
if you want to have the netel5x9.nfi file just e-mail me and ask for it
You can also ask me for assistens

I made a typing mistake the file name is: netel5x9.inf (I mixed up the order of the letters of the extention)
